Doing calculations using Kawri

Rate this topic

Dear All,

I have uploaded a file in the files section, that starts discussing

the 'Ancient Indian method of doing calculations using Kawri'. In the

current stage the document only deals with addition only.

The URL is:

Sreenadh/Kawri%20-%\

\

20Addition.pdf

The method of using Kawri to do primary calculation is a wide spread

practice among Kerala astrologers even today. Kawri is used to do

Arithmetical calculations - Every text that mentions 'Pati ganita'

point to calculations done by ancient scholars using similar method.

Hope you will find the document beneficial.

Ancient Indian scholars dealt with many branches of mathematics. The

major branches would be -

1) Algibra (Pati Ganita)

2) Roots and Vargas etc (Kuttaka Ganita)

3) Polinomials (Beeja Ganita)

4) Astronomical mathametics (Gola Ganita)

5) Geometry

While dealing with any of these branches 'Numerical arithmetic was

done using 'Kawri' whether it be primary mathematics like normal

addition, subtraction etc or complex calculations involved in

Astronomy, Root finding etc. It seems that in North India (possibly

due to continuous invasions by foreigners, wars etc) this method is

lost similar to many other knowledge branches. But in South India the

method got preserved through Gugu-Sishya Parampara and it is still

available, like many other knowledge branches. In the ancient past

Kawri method of doing mathematical calculation was widespread and

well-known through out India - It is the heritage of India and not

just of Kerala; even though Kerala happened to do the service of

preserving the traditional knowledge.

Sreenadh

Dear All,

I was expecting some comments on the same by someone! But till now I

saw none! Is it that no one is interested in doing or even reading

about maths done using Kawri?

At least soem keralite members will comment on the same I hoped!

Sunil ji! Where r you? ;) & Where is Madhu ji now a days?!

Hare ramakrishna,

dear sreenadh,

good work ,and like before we discussed if the english version coming out many of our frnds indian and indian borns residing outside of india showed interest in it. Any way my full support to your efforts .I was planning to do a study group in delhi and some my frnds are already interested in cowrie kriyas .Your participation in it will be highly appreciated and This is a purely a weekly gathering who ever interested to learn and discuss the kerala tradition of astrology .In its purest form .

Good ,keep going ,and i am still to read it ,though downloaded it .

I will offcourse i will write my views .I expect sri ravi nair ji ,krishnaji ,punditji , justin and sunil john and all others also actively participate as i am a professional man full time into astro .so some days will be extremely busy .The main problem i am facing is lack of aware ness of some ppl ,so major part is spent on explanations .

Thanks and regrds

Dear Sreenadhji,

Great work and Great initiation!!!

We being away from Kerala since long, are really interested in knowing more about Kerala Astrology and its traditions.

I have gone through the articles yesterday, need to read it again and again for getting the trick.

I would be eagerly awaiting rest of the articles.

Please don't " read " it again and again - but instead take some

Kawris or stones and " DO IT " on top of you table or in floor. :) That

is what the method is intented for. :)

" DO calculations, using stones or cowries on top of your table, in a

fast and efficient way, as done by our ancestors "

Note: Please don't read it again and again and try to repeat the

steps using paper; That is not what they are intended for. Only when

you DO IT you will understand the beuty of of the method. :)

Dear Sreenadhji,

Yes, that is a good advice :) Let me try it that way. I have seen

people do it but was astonished what they were doing, now I realise

the trick.
