Guest guest
This is an important temple dedicated to Lord Siva. This temple has one of the elemental lingas, the vayu (air) linga. There is a lamp inside the inner sanctum that is constantly flickering despite the lack of air movement inside. The air-linga can be observed to move even when the pujaris close off the entrance to the main Deity room, which does not have any windows. You can see the flames on several ghee lamps flicker as if blown by moving air. The linga is white and is considered Swayambhu, or self-manifested. The linga here is identified as one of the Panchabhutalingas (the five lingas made up of the five elements of the universe) - wind, water, fire, earth and ether. The linga at Srikalahasti is Vayulinga or one made up of wind. Kalahasti, known as Dakshina Kailasa is surrounded by huge mountains and sanctified by river Swarnamukhi. Inside the Garba Graha, the centre place, is the unique and sacred Vayu Linga which is considered to be a naturally formed one (Swyambu). The linga is covered by a golden screen. Two sets of oil lamps keep burning in front of the Linga. While one set is always flickering, the other one burns steadily. This surprising phenomenon signifies the mind of an ordinary mortal and the mind of a devotee who has realized God. There are various other features like Patala Vinayaka at the basement, the idol of Dkashninamurthi holding forth torch of flames (symbol of knowledge), the Linga bearing the symbols of a spider, serpent and elephant. It is believed that all these features reflect the tenets of the 18 stanzas of Isopanishad. Kalasarpa Dosha (rahu ketu dosha) is said to cause several difficulties during the course of one's life: unhappiness in the family, continuous loss in business, miserable married life, childlessness, ill health, skin diseases, trouble in eyes, ears and throat, poverty and financial difficulties, delay in marriage, improper development of body organs, loss and litigations, striving very hard to progress in life, always worried. People, who have built their houses on plots after demolishing the snake pits, are found to face ill health as long as they live in that house. Sri Kalahasti is also reputed as Rahu Ketu Kshethra. Of the nine Grahas, Rahu and Ketu are very important as they influence our life to a great extent. Special prayers here can ward off the ill effects caused by the planetary positions of Rahu and Kethu. Rahu-Ketu sarpadosha nivarana puja Rahu Ketu Sarpadosha Nivarana puja is a highly efficacious puja conducted in the temple of Sri Kalahasteeswara, reputed as Rahu-Ketu kshetra. Those who are affected by Rahu-Ketu doshas, Grahadoshas, sarva doshas, those who are unmarried, who are childless and people who are affected with long-standing problems perform this unique puja to remove such doshas and get desired result. Thousands of devotees, who received good results after performing this puja, come from all corners of India and abroad and continue to fulfil their vows again and again The other deities installed in the temple 'Sri Pathala Vinayaka', 'Sri Balambika', 'Sri Kalimatha' outside the shrine and 'Lord Saneeswara', 'Bezawada Kanakadurga', 'Lord Venkateswara', 'Lord Subrahmanya', 'Sri Kasi Visweswara', 'Sri Ramalingeswara' & 'Sri Dakshinamurthy' inside the shrine make it a complete Pilgrimage. Also 'Sri Saraswathi Theeram' commonly known as the 'Pathala Ganga' is inside the temple. According to the Puranas, the holy water of this well relieves devotees from chronic diseases and physical deformities. Thus a visit to Srikalahastheeswara swamy temple to offer prayers by a devotee makes it equivalent to visiting all the other punyakshetras of great importance in India. According to ancient Tamil sources Sri Kalahasti has been known as the 'Kailas of the South' for slightly more than two thousand years and the small river on whose banks it sits, the 'Ganges of the South.' Kailas is perhaps India's most revered spiritual symbol. It is the abode of Shiva, from whose head, according to legend, the Ganges is said to flow. Shiva, 'that which is auspicious at all places, times and in all circumstances' is a symbol of the Self and the Ganges flowing from his head represents the spiritualized or awakened mind. A mind sourced in Spirit is a river of immeasurable power and life-giving goodness. The claim that Kalahasti is the 'Kailas of the South' simply means that the small hill near the temple is to be taken as the spiritual equivalent of the Himalayan Kailas. Likewise, the small river flowing in a northerly direction beside the temple is to be taken as the mighty Ganges. The Vedas posit four ends for which human beings strive in their search for happiness: pleasure (kama), security or wealth (artha), duty (dharma) and freedom (moksha). In the temple at Kalahasti these four universal motivations, which may take any worldly form, are, according to temple literature, converted into spiritual impulses. They are represented by four deities facing in the four cardinal directions. Shiva in the form of Dakshinamoorthy represents desire, in this case the desire for liberation, although he more commonly is said to represent the feeling of wealth (dakshina) that comes when you know who you really are. At Kalahasti the Goddess Gnanaprasoonamba (the giver of knowledge or the mother of all knowledge) represents the 'wealth' i.e. freedom from limitation conferred by Self knowledge. The deity Kalahastishwara (the lord of Kalahasti) faces west and symbolizes liberation. Liberation, the death of ego upon the rediscovery of the Self, is the final stage of life just as setting is the sun's last act before it disappears over the horizon. Unfortunately the temple literature from which this information was gleaned neglected to include mention of the forth deity. History of the temple in Brief : SriKalahasti is named after the staunch devotees of Lord Shiva. They were the Spider(Sri), the Serpent(Kala) and the Elephant(Hasti). Appeased with their unflinching devotion, Lord Shiva gave them a boon that their names be merged with the Vayulinga and called as SriKalahasteewara. There are several other legends connected to the glory of the temple. Prominent among them is of Parvati who was cursed by Lord Shiva to discard her heavenly body and assumed the human form. To get rid off the above curse Parvati did long penance here. Pleased with her deep devotion Lord Shiva again restored her body hundred times better than her previous heavenly body and initiated various mantras including Panchakshari. Consequent of this, Parvati gained Shiva Gnanam and came to know as Gnanaprasunamba. Cursed to became a ghost Ghanakala prayed at Srikalahasti for 15 years and after chanting Bhairava Mantra many times Lord Shiva restored her original form. Mayura, Chandra and Devendra were also freed from their curses after taking bath in Swarnamukhi and prayed at Srikalahasti. To Bhakta Markandeya, Lord Shiva appeared in Srikalahasti and preched that a Guru alone could make esoteric teachings and, therefore he is Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara. At Srikalahasti, Lord Shiva tested the unshakable devotion of Kanna (Later became Bhaktha Kannappa) before the sages gathered at Srikalahasti. With his divine power, Lord Shiva created a Tremour and the roof tops of the temple began to fall. All the sages ran away from the scene except Kannappa who covered the Linga with his body from any damage. In another incident, Kannappa plucked out one of his eyes and placed in the eye of Linga which was oozing with blood and tears. When the tears and the blood were still trickling from another eye, Kannappa decided to remove his second eye and placed one of his feet on the spot of the right eye of the Shiva Linga. Before he could pull out his second eye with the arrow, Lord Shiva appeared and restored his eye while granting him a boon to occupy a place close to him.
