Diabetes and Astrology Part One: A Simple Astrological Marker for

Type 1 Diabetes

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By Renay Oshop (info)
Note: the charts for this article are online here:
http://jyotish.ws/materials/chartL1.html
In Ayurveda, an ancient living philosophy-based medicine from India,
Jupiter is associated with the kloma or pancreas. A corresponding
signature of Jupiter in the charts of Type 1 Diabetes, a serious
disease fundamentally of the pancreas, has been observed. Type 1
Diabetes seems a likely candidate for astrological study since there
is such a strong model in Indian astrology's sister science of
medicine, Ayurveda, where a clear primary indicator, Jupiter, is
present.
(Note: In Type 1 Diabetes - formerly called Juvenile Diabetes - the
immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas; Type 2
Diabetes - also called Insulin-Resistant Diabetes - is a far more
common illness in which the body resists using insulin correctly).
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a support group for Diabetes
Type 1 sufferers in my area, where I asked for birth information to
support an astrological study.
Accordingly, eight charts were presented to me, and they are all
included here.
A striking thing has occurred with this sampling group of eight: all
except one have Jupiter in or aspecting the sixth house of disease,
and the one exception has Jupiter instead compromised as the loser of
a planetary war with Mercury.
I am not suggesting that the owners of all charts who have a
compromised Jupiter will have the disease. After all, Type 1 Diabetes
is seen in less than half of a percent of the American population. A
compromised Jupiter almost certainly is necessary but not sufficient.
I am also not saying that this is going to be the only astrological
marker in a complex illness. My experience at the support meeting
made me realize that there are a wide variety of outcomes even with
one specific diagnosis.
Nonetheless, to find any such essential marker is radical from the
scientific perspective. Remarkably, no previous astrological
indicator using the scientific method has been demonstrated. It would
make sense that the first one would be a simple one.
To put this in perspective, there is only a one-in-three chance that
Jupiter would be in a position in or aspecting the sixth house (e.g.,
if it is in the second, sixth, tenth or twelfth house) once we assume
randomness and hence equal distribution throughout the days, seasons,
and years across the twelve houses of Vedic Astrology.
To get seven out of eight occurrences of something that only has a
one in three random chance of happening is equal to throwing a six-
sided die that has three different colors painted on two sides each
and getting the same color seven times out of eight. Mathematically
the chance of this happening is, via the binomial distribution,
0.00244. In other words, if we assume a randomness of astrology, I
hit a jackpot of 1 in 410 in acquiring these charts.
More likely, this data supports the underlying principles of all of
us astrologers by finally demonstrating scientific specificity in any
part of astrology.
Indeed, that may be the real jackpot.
If you are looking for a 95 percent confidence in Jupiter's pattern,
the binomial mean is 2.6667, the variance is 1.7778, and the standard
deviation is 1.3333. The Adjusted Wald confidence interval here is
0.5078 to 0.9989. If you are concerned about a small n (number of
sample), keep in mind that we are using the binomial not the normal
distribution, so such a confidence level is possible.
In other words, with 95 percent confidence we can say something that
should happen one third of the time is instead happening at least 51
percent of the time.
A partial signature for Type 1 Diabetes seems to exist.
The charts I collected are the following. Considering the rarity of
Diabetes Type 1, we are fortunate to have eight charts to work with.
As per Michael Laughrin's suggestions, I looked at the fifth house,
lagna and D-27. You may notice that the fifth house pancreatic region
is typically afflicted.
Chart #. In Fifth House. Lord of Fifth House.
Chart 1. fine. fine.
Chart 2. 2 Rx SA in en sign and 3 mal aspects. in 8th in enemy's sign.
Chart 3. aspected by Mars. in 3rd conjunct 3 malefics.
Chart 4. 2 malefics, aspected by a malefic. loser of planetary war,
conjunct 2 malefics.
Chart 5. fine. aspected by Saturn.
Chart 6. fine. conjunct 3 malefics.
Chart 7. Mars (swarashi). in fifth.
Chart 8. 3 malefics. in fifth conjunct 2 malefics.
We may also expect the lagna or lord of the lagna to be challenged
because of the nature of having a long term difficult illness.
Chart #. In Lagna. Lord of Lagna.
Chart 1. 3 malefics. in first completely combust with 2 malefics.
Chart 2. fine. fine.
Chart 3. Moon in enemy's sign. in 3rd conjunct 3 malefics.
Chart 4. fine. conjunct malefic and aspected by malefic.
Chart 5. aspected by retrograde Saturn. fine.
Chart 6. 2 malefics, hemmed by malefics and conjunct 2 malefics
Chart 7. malefic and aspected by malefic. fine.
Chart 8. aspected by malefic. conjunct 3 malefics.
The 27th Divisional chart, traditionally used for looking at the
person's strength, is also compromised, as expected. In order to not
unduly lengthen this article any further, no D-27 charts are
included, but a summary is given below.
Behavior in D-27
Chart 1. Jupiter in enemy's rashi in 6th
Chart 2. Jupiter conjunct Saturn in enemy's rashi in the 11th
Chart 3. Jupiter conjunct Mars in Scorpio in the 9th
Chart 4. Jupiter debilitated in the 1st
Chart 5. Jupiter debilitated in 3rd
Chart 6. [time not precise enough to tell]
Chart 7. Jupiter in enemy's rashi in 12th
Chart 8. Jupiter debilitated in 12th
Nobody in this study group of eight escape three of four primary
criteria, and at least five have four out of four:
A. Jupiter in or aspecting the sixth house of sickness.
B. Fifth house of pancreatic region or fifth house lord afflicted.
C. Lagna or lagna lord afflicted.
D. Jupiter discomforted in the D-27 of bodily strength
Pretty compelling, and Ayurvedically sound.
There are sutras in Jaimini and Parasara that also address diabetes,
but I found them to be relevant in just a few of our cases. These
more advanced descriptions of karakamshas, etc. may be sufficient but
not necessary.
The probability distributions of these sutras as well as for criteria
B, C and D are difficult to quantize, but as shown above, for
criterion A it is not. Criterion A is the essential easy-to-observe
unifying theme and is demonstrably likely to be greater than chance.
No matter how outlandish this article's subject may be to some, one
can not ignore a stable real biological marker regardless of origin.
For example, let us say that all of Type 1 Diabetes patients had a
middle name that began with a vowel. However incredible, if this were
true with 95 percent sampling confidence, we would have to pay
attention. Instead we have here the well-established field of astrol
ogy as unifying agent.
The day may come in the West when astrological screening is as viable
as genetic screening. For that, we need more data.
If you are an astrologer, I encourage you to look for these markers
for any clients you have who have Type 1 Diabetes. Please email me
the data at info, positive or negative, and I will
centralize it, and report back.
Some may be surprised at the role of Jupiter, a benefic, in disease.
In a future issue of Michael Laughrin's North America Jyotish
Newsletter, we will look at the role of Venus, another struggling
benefic in Diabetes, and signifier of sweet and blood in Ayurveda, in
the onset of symptoms.
