Most of us here have been doing astrology for so long that we don't even consider questions like this. Signs in trine to each other tend to think and react the same way. (Virgo-Capricorn-Taurus). Opposite signs (Virgo-Pices) can sometimes see eye-to-eye and other times be pulling in opposite directions. But other planets besides the Sun relate to compatibility in the birth chart. Doesn't Linda Goodman have a book on 'Love Signs?' Some of her observations are quite accurate. The Indian system (Jyotish) has a whole different method of comparing charts.
