Namaste all.I was clearing up some of my old papers, when I found the following 'treasure'. I do not know where I had collected it from. It was published by 'Brahma Vidya' sponsored by Kumbakonam advaita sabha. It says it was found in Saraswati Mahal Library in Tanjore. It is supposed to be a composition by Adi Shankara at the time of his seeing the pAdukAs of his guru on the shores of Narmada! :

Dear Sir,

My humble pranams to you. It is really a sublime stotra.

I have got some doubts sir. If this really be a composition of our beloved

Acharya, then why it is not been chanted in Sringeri Mutt?

I have been blessed with the Guru Padukas of Shri Abhinava Vidya Tirtha and as a

part of my nitya panchayatana, i worship them. I asked Shri Bharati Tirtha

Swamigal for a sampradaya guru paduka stotram for my nitya guru anusandhana to

the Holy Padukas. Swamigal gave me the popular hymn " nAlIka-nIkAsa

padAdritAbhyAm nArIvimOhAdi nivArakAbhyAM.....namo namaH srIgurupAdukAbhyAM... " .

This is the popular stotram composed by Shri Sacchidananda Sivabhinava Nrisimha

Bharati Swamigal of Sringeri. Right from Shri Chandrasekhara Bharati to Shri

Bharati Tirtha Swamigal chant this guru paduka stotram which is now the Guru

Paduka Stotra of Sringeri Parampara.

Has it been over-looked by our jagatgurus?

Kindly clarify because i too have a wonderful Siva Stotram which was given to my

guruji at Kaladi by a Nambudri. This stotram was carefully preserved by that

Nambudri and he is of the view and belief that it was composed by Acharya

Sankara Bhagavatpada.

Guru Paduka Panchakam

[The pentad praising sandals of Guru]

By Adi Shankara Bhagawat Pada

Translated by P. R. Ramachander

[These five verses is supposed to have been sung ay the Bhagawat Pada when he

went first to meet his Guru Govinda Bhagawat Pada in the banks of Narmada. He

has also written another stotra called Guru Paduka stotram.]

Jagajjanisthe ma layalayabhyam,

Aganya punyodhaya bhavithabhyam,

Thrayee sirojatha nivedithabhyam,

Namo nama Guru padukabhyam. 1

Salutations and salutations to the sandal of the Guru,

Which is the cause creation, upkeep and destruction of all the worlds,

Which can be attained only through limitless amount of good deeds,

And which is being talked about the Vedanthas.

Vipathamasthamo vikarthanabhyam,

Visishta sampathiha vivardhanabhyam,

Nama janasesha visesham dhabhyam,

Namo nama Guru padukabhyam. 2

Salutations and salutations to the sandal of the Guru,

Which is the sun, which dispels the darkness of dangers,

Which increases more and more invaluable wealth,

And which blesses attainments on people who worship it.

Samastha dustharka kalanka banga,

Panodhana prouda jalashayabhyam,

Nirasrayabhyam nikhilasrayabhyam,

Namo nama Guru padukabhyam. 3

Salutations and salutations to the sandal of the Guru,

Which is the water in the lake that washes and cleans,

The stained knowledge created by false arguments,

Which is not dependent on any other thing,

And which is depended upon by every other thing.

Thaprayadhithya kararthithanam,

Chayamayeebhyam aathiseethalbhyam,

Aapanna samrakshana deekshithabhyam,

Namo nama Guru padukabhyam. 4

Salutations and salutations to the sandal of the Guru,

Which provides shade which is very cool,

To those burnt by the three types of sufferings,

And which has assumed protection of those affected,

By dangers as its primary duty.

Yatho giro aaprapya diya samastha,

Hriya nivrutha samameva nithya,

Thabhyamajesachyutha bhavithabhyam,

Namo nama Guru padukabhyam. 5

Salutations and salutations to the sandal of the Guru,

Which makes all knowledge retreat with shame,

When it tries to logically describe its greatness,

And which is being praised by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Ye paduka panchakamadarena ,

Padanthi nithyam prayatha prabhathe,

Thesham gruhe nithya nivasa sheela,

Sri desikendrasya kadaksha Lakshmi. 6

The king of teachers will live in their houses

And the mother of wealth will grace it with her glance

In the houses of those who read this pentad on sandals,

Daily morning with devotion.

Namaste:

There are many Slokas with the title - " Guru pAdukA pancakam " and the one stated

by ProfVK is attributed to Adi Sankara. Wikipedia has some interesting

information on the importance of pAdukA and it is a worthwile reading material

for interested members.

I like the following audio version of Gurupadaka panchakam (not the version by

Adi Sankara).

What is interesting is that the Guru Padhuka Panchakam was printed some 50 years before or so, by the Tanjore Serfoji Manuscript Library, in their advaita catalogue, as a work of an unknown composer. In the course of time it has "become" a composition of the Revered Bhashyakara.

Namaste,

The version chanted at Sringeri Math is at:

http://www.svbf.org/journal/vol1no3/paduka.pdf

The version posted by Prof.VK-ji apparently is not online yet.
