What lies beyond SELF is not touched. How could it be? Lewis 85.......... " Therefore become dispassionate and inhere as the Self. Such inherence is spontaneous (no effort is needed to inhere as the Self). It is realised after thoughts are eliminated and investigation ceases. Recapitulate your state after you break off from it, and then will know all and the significance of its being knowable and unknowable at the same time. Thus realising the unknowable, one abides in immortality for ever and ever. " Chapter XV:85, Ashtavakra Section, Tripura Rahasya Regarding Nisargadatta words: 68. After experiencing the Inner Self, he will be able to identify the Self with the Supreme and thus destroy the root of ignorance. There is no doubt of it. 69. The inner Self is realised in advanced contemptation and that state of realisation is called Nirvikalpa Samadhi. Memory of that realisation enables one to identify the Inner Self with the Universal Self (as " I am That " ). Chapter XV:68-69, Ashtavakra Section, Tripura Rahasya ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hi Lewis, Previous to " Therefore become dispassionate... " is the very telling passage which relates to our discussion on Deep Sleep/Sushupti of some time ago: " Will anything be apparent to you, if there be no consciousness? Even to say that nothing is apparent to you (as in sleep) requires the light of consciousness. Is not your awareness of your unawareness (in sleep) due to consciousness? " I have extracted some sources of this very important argument from various places in the Advaitic canon including T.R. They may be of interest to you and the members generally: http://homepage.eircom.net/~ombhurbhuva/deepsleep.htm The root directory will reveal a pot-pourri of stories and ruminations http://homepage.eircom.net/~ombhurbhuva/ I am happy to say that Dennis Waite who runs a very fancy web site http://advaita.org.uk/ told me that it was the lowest tech he had ever encountered, Best Wishes, Michael

Could you please restate the issue about deep sleep that we talked about? I am interested in this not as a proof or argument about the existence of Self or awareness during sleep (state of nescience). I am interested in the nature of awareness/consciousness and objects.
