That was a question I had a while back but feared to ask as not to look stupid. Who is directing awareness? If awareness is prior to consciousness then what directs awareness or is it that awareness just is and consciousness focuses attention? Are attention and awareness different? When we ask 'prior to', what we mean is not 'prior to' chronologically, but 'prior to' meaning comes before in fundamental importance. In short, 'Prior to' as in the Latin used by Kant 'a priori'. Once the question has been worded as a precendence/dependence issue, the answer becomes obvious: It all depends!
