Spiritual Quest, Part II

In meditating on " I am " , it strikes me that simply

" I " is more fundamental than " I am " . There must be

an " I " before there can be an " I am " .

I meditate on " I " . I say " I " to myself and observe.

But I am seeking the source, the deepest origination

of this " I " . So I say to myself not " I " , but the

tiniest, fractional initial syllable of " I " . I say

to myself just the initial aspirant breath of

speaking " I " . I witness in myself just the initial

intent of speaking " I " .

Over and over, as an endless string of beads, this

initial spark of intent streams out. And I witness

that stream.

And I know that whatever I am is beyond that stream.

What I am ultimately is beyond even the intent.

Yes, this is what Sri Ramana Maharshi told people to

do, follow the 'I' back to its source by saying

I-I, I-I, I-I.

Not just repeating I-I mentally, but by finding the

sense of 'I' or I-ness and see from where it arose.

Maharshi, Verse 30:

30. If one enquires 'Who am I?' within the mind, the

individual 'I' falls down abashed as soon as one reaches

the Heart and immediately Reality manifests itself

spontaneously as 'I-I'. Although it reveals itself as

'I', it is not the ego but the Perfect Being, the

Absolute Self.

Per this verse then, the souce is to be found in the Heart.

Notice he doesn't refer to " saying " 'I-I', but indicates that

Reality spontaneously manifests itself as 'I-I'.

Yes, But see here where he says:

" Think 'I' 'I' 'I' and hold to that one thought to

the exclusion of all others. "

Talks #266

Another time he told a women it would be enough

if she just repeated 'I'.

I dont know where to find the quote.

Like it says in the quote you sent, " enquire

'Who am I?' " (which puts attention on the I-

thought) " and the individual 'I' falles and the

Absolute Reality Reveals itself as 'I-I' " .

So what I meant to covey is: attention paid to 'I'

or 'I am' is the tool to bring about the falling

of the false individual 'I' and the revealing of

the Real.

Bill, I think we are trying to make the same point,

but the words get in the way.
