Covert meaning achieving realization and dropping the identification with maya? If so, overt. Since you were discussing the context of suicide I thought you meant 'overt' as in deliberately attempting taking one's own life in an actual suicide attempt and 'covert' to mean living a destructive life by, say, drinking onself to death over a few years due perhaps to self-loathing or addiction, ect.,. If this is what Beck was alluding to then I agree; the difference between 'overt' and 'covert' suicide may actually not be that big after all - the latter only including a more lengthy process of self-punishment. It seems you are taking overt to mean both of the examples I give above and covert to mean Enlightenment. I'm not sure that Enlightenment can really be described as 'suicide' (though I'm sure the ego thinks of it that way). After all, discussing Enlightenment, there is this from 'I Am That': Q: Does it mean death? M: It means life at last. It's an interesting issue. Certainly, there is much from Buddhism that emphasises the Annihilation of the 'self' - and much of what Nisargadatta says can seem to validate this. Yet, when reading his conversations there is the undeniable sense of someone who is completely and unmistakably 'Alive'. If we accept that Enlightenment is the same for everyone, and thus Christian references to the topic which discuss being At-One with God and Creation are simply a different cultural expression meaning the same thing as eastern notions of Annihilation seen from a different angle, then is it not equally valid to say that the pursuit of Enlightenment is as much a form of 'Self'-Actualisation as it is a covert means of 'ending ones [dream] life?
