They blame western ways in

general and America in

particular for the demise of

their idea of a proper,

righteous way to live. The

idea of freedom is scary to

those who live " by the book. "

We are " The Great Satan "

because we are against their

notion of God, making us " the

adversary! "

America is a study in

contradictions for some people.

When an American reporter was

blindfolded and taken by jeep and

on foot to the hidout of Osama

Bin Laden to get an interview, he

brought along a fancy satellite

telephone to file the story and

stay in touch with his editors.

Afterward, when he was alone with

a guard, the guard asked him if

he would mind using the phone so

the guard could call his brother

in Detroit.

People who profess to hate

America and people who would love

to live in America are often found

in the same family in the Arab and

Muslim worlds.

America is a threat to the

traditional, highly patriarchal,

religion-dominated life the Muslim

fundies want in their countries.

Apparently, a medieval notion of

righteous life is not compatible

with rock & roll, T & A, Coca

Cola, Hollywood movies, and

satellite dish TV. Allah can't

compete with crass American

commercialism -- I guess He needs

a hipper ad agency, eh?
