Hi Laura, just a little about me. I'm 65, a writer and a semi-invalid.

Although I have always looked inwards, recently I've been looking at

Buddhism and meditation. I'm discovering things about myself, that I

have probably always known but are beginning to have names. I have

always been into a very simple life style and tried to non-act wherever

possibly, choosing to live without much in the way of posessions, and

giving what I have to others. (It helps now that I have a very small

disability pension, living on less that 7K a year, including all costs,

rent, etc.) <G> I'm trying to accomplish a meditative state without

much sucess as yet, but I have the feeling that I am close to it in the

way I process, anyway...

Hi Jerry,

Sounds like your life *is* a spiritual practice even without

meditative states.

I used to have trouble getting into meditative states too,

then I discovered a secret...if I do almost anything

continuously with my mind for even a short time....

a minute, three minutes....I start to get into a different

state. It can be almost anything ... concentrate on something,

remain mindful, anything...after a few minutes it gets easier. The

trick though is to really do just one thing continuously for

the first few minutes .you have to sort of hold your mind in one

place, it's not a natural thing to do... then your mind quickly settles

into a sort of groove.

Dear God, listen to me prattling on as if I'm a meditation

teacher! :)

Take all my advice with a healthy grain of salt. Hopefully

somebody who knows more than I do will jump in here.

Your friend,

Laura

Thank you Laura, I don't see my life as being spiritual at all, I'm more

like an empty cup. I know I need to cultivate a more disciplined method

before I can meditate " the way it says in the books. " My mind wanders

from one thing to another and I have to fight for any focus and in the

attempt tries to focus on the battle. I will get it though. <G> I

promise not to pay any attention to what you say. LOL
