Udupi: Road to be named after saint-composer

Udupi Dec 19:

The road connecting Ambagilu and Manipal passing through Perampalli

will be named “Nekkar Krishnadasa Marg†after the 18th Century

saint-composer Varaha Thimappa.

Home Minister V.S. Acharya will unveil the plaque of the newly named road on December 20

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, president of the Nekkar

Krishnadasa (Varaha Thimappa) Foundation P.N. Gopalkrishna Rao said

that the saint-composer Krishnadasa who had the pen name “Varaha

Thimappa†was born in the family of Nekkars, who lived at Perampalli in

Shivally village near Udupi, in the 18th Century. He was one of the

prominent “haridasasâ€.

He had written many “kirtanas†on Lord Thimappa, Lord Krishna and

others. Two of his compositions “Lakshmi Kalyana†and “Sri Krishna

Charitre†are regarded as classics.

Varaha Thimappa’s works were discovered and collected by Basel

Missionary Hermann Mögling (1811-1881) from Germany. Another German

Missionary Ferdinand Kittel (1832-1903) had said that Varaha Thimappa

was one of the three great “haridasas†along with Purandaradasa and

Kanakadasa.

The foundation had brought out books on Varaha Thimappa’s works.
