The other side of Sri. Vishwesha Thirtharu

Friends,

" Sri Krishna Matha and Sri Madhvacharya's SarvaJna

Peeta belong to Madhvas and we will never allow anyone

to take over this " - Sri. Vishwesha Thirtharu of

Pejavara maTha

A Kannada T.V. channel " Udaya TV " telecasts a program

called " Jedara Bale " (Spider Web) in which a very

talented and articulate moderator Sri. Deepak Timiah

hosts a one-on-one debate focusing hot topics of the

society. Here the debaters are usually the key

personalities who are either behind such issues or who

are making news around such issues.

Last week the topic was about this Udupi Kanaka Gopura

issue and the debaters were Sri Vishwesha Thirtharu of

Pejawara MaTha and Sri. H. Vishwanath who is a former

Karnataka Minister and a Kuruba community leader. This

was a live debate. Such debates do provide viewers

independent, impartial and firsthand information from

both sides.

Just for the benefit of those who did not have a

chance to watch this wonderful debate, I would like to

share my thoughts in this forum.

Until this debate, I had only listened to Sri

Vishwesha Thirthauru's shastric lectures and

pravachanas. I just do not have words to describe the

manner in which he handled such a hot prime time

public debate watched by millions across Karnataka. I

personally urge every madhva to watch it to see this

other side of Sri. Vishwesha Thirtharu if you can find

a recording of this program.

Sri. Swamiji remained very calm throughout the debate

with his ever smiling face and patiently listened to

opponent Sri. Vishwanath's arguments or Sri Deepak's

questions and gave confident answers point to point

without a stutter. As opposed to his opponent, not

even once Sri. Swamiji interrupted either the

moderator or his opponent. When Sri. Vishwanath pulled

out some 1966 Supreme Court judgments; Sri Swamiji

showed him the correct interpretations of such

Judgments. At times, it was truly amazing to see Sri

Swamiji's command over English and fluency (please

note swamji has not attended any modern educational

institutions like his opponent).

It was very noticeable that whenever Swamiji started

convincing his opponent / Viewers with his factual

answers, the opponent tried to distract him to another

topic. For example, even though the issue was

primarily the Gopura demolition, Sri. Vishwanth jumped

from owning the Krishna temple (he does not want to

call it Krishna Matha) by Government, to permit all

devotees to physically touch the feet of Lord Krishna,

let everyone eat together in Udupi, discrimination

against non Brahmins by Udupi temple administrators,

etc. For every issue, Swamiji numbed his opponent,

moderator as well as viewers with his brilliant

answers and counter arguments. In fact, at the end

both the moderator and the opponent conceded with a

question - why is it Sri Vishwesha Thirtha is fighting

this battle and not the actual Udupi swamijis who are

responsible for all these mess? Sri. Swamiji's answer

was very simple - it is not an issue of one MaTha and

the Udupi Krishna MaTha belongs to all eight maThas

and he has an equal responsibility to defend the

Krishna MaTha when baseless and politically motivated

allegations are made against it.

After the debate I really wondered what would have

been the state of this issue if Madhvas did not have a

great articulate soul like Sri. Vishwesha Thirtharu. I

consider myself truly blessed for seeing and hearing

such a mahatma during my life time.

Although it is impossible for me to duplicate here

every quote that came out of Sri Swamiji's mouth, I

would like to list a few gems:

* Sri Krishna Matha and Sri Madhvacharya's SarvaJna

Peeta belong to Madhvas and we will never allow anyone

to take over this.. What an unambiguous and

unequivocal statement!

* If the government wants to take over the

administration of Krishna temple, do not apply that

rule for Udupi Ashta MaTha alone. Do it for every

Matha and every other religious institution regardless

of whether it belongs to Hindus or Muslims or

Christians.

* Every community has its own Sampradaaya and such

sampradaayas binds such communities and their

institutions. Do you think you can go and touch the

idol in Tirupathi? (While answering Sri. Vishwanath's

question every devotee should be allowed to touch Lord

Krishna's idol).

* When the moderator and Opponent insisted Sri Swamiji

to not to use the Word Matha while describing Krishna

temple as it was not the word used by the modern

courts, Sri Swamiji pulled out a Sanskrit quote from

the founder of matha - Srimad Acharya and showed them

he called it Krishna MaTha.

* When Sri Deepak Timiah brought to his attention that

some of the Ashta Matha pontiffs are spreading the

words like - there was no incident like Kanakana Kimdi

(a hole formed in the wall when Lord Krishna gave

darshana to Sri. Kanakadasaru), his unequivocal answer

was, " ..In a democracy everyone is entitled to air

their opinion and that is what we are seeing. I have

personally argued with people who tried to paint

stories like a crack appeared due to lightening, etc.

they are all without any proof. I firmly believe that

Kanaakana Kimdi incident is very true and I will stand

by this statement for ever.. "

* sri Vishwanth wanted viewers to know that some of

the Ashta Math Pontiffs have some Mumbai underworld

connections and he has been getting death threats ever

since the big rally in Bangalore. Sri Swamiji's

continued: It is a sin to do such things and such

people are enemies of Lord Krishna himself. The Lord

will never forgive such evil people.

* When Sri. Deepak said - " you preach and believe

everything is after all God's will and this (Kanaka

Gopura incident and its aftermath) is also his will to

empower the government (and lower community) to play a

bigger role.. " - Sri Swamiji said - " .. Yes, no doubt

it is indeed Lord's will. However, the same Lord

expects you to try and uphold the truth using the

wisdom and strengths he has given you. Who knows, this

indeed may be Lord Krishna's will to bring Brahmin and

Kuruba communities closer together than ever before " -

What a diplomacy!

Finally, you may want to know this. Sri. Deepak asked

the former minister Sri. Vishwanth these questions:

how much do you know about Sri Kanaka Daasaru?, since

when you are aware that Kanaka's Gopura?, how much did

you know about Udupi before this incident?, Sri.

Vishwanth gave a very honest answer, he did not know

anything about these until a few Kuruba community

people spoke to him. That is when he realized the

suppression of innocent Kurubas and decided to do

something about this.. " . Sri. Deepak did not have to

ask the same question to Sri Swamiji and I appreciated

the honest answer of Sri. Vishwanath.

Regards,

Murthy

We have to protest against their evil thinking.
