Srimadhagavatham-

skandha9

Chapter 1 and 2- soorya vamsa

This skandha deals with eesaanukatha or the

seventh lakshana of purana that is , the stories of the Lord.

Brahma is said to have come from the golden

lotus on the navel of the Lord. The word

padhma stands for 1000 crores, denoting the Time which was absorbed in the

Supreme Being. Gold denotes suddha satthva.

Vivasvaan or Soorya was born to

Kasyapa, the son of Marici, the mind-born son of Brhama. and Adhithi. Sraadddha

deva became the Manu ansd was known as Vaivasvatha Manu as he was the son of

Vivasvaan. Since Manu did not have sons Vasishta performed puthrakaameshti

yaaga. Sraddha approached the officiating priest and asked him to chant

manthra to get her a daughter. He did

likewise and a daughter was born and named Ila. Manu was disappointed and asked

Vasishta the reason and Vasishta came to know that the mistake was due to

chanting another manthra and with his yogic power changed the daughter into a

son and gave him the name Sudhyumna.

When

Sudhyumna became the king he went once to Sukumaravana under the mount Meru

during his hunting expedition. There Siva was alone with Parvathi, who ordained

that any man entering there will become a woman. Sudhyumna became Ila again.

Then Budha the son of Moon saw her and fell in love and they married. Pururavas

was born to them. Sudhyumna meditated on Vasishta and giot the boon of being a

woman for one month and a man for the next and thus ruled his kingdom for a

while but the people were not satisfied with him. He crowned Pururavas as the king and went to the

forest to do penance.

Vaivasvatha Manu also did penance for getting

sons and got sons, Ikshvaku, the forefather of the clan of Raghu,, the great a grandfather

of Rama, Nrga, Saryathi, whose daughter was Sukanya who married Cyavana, Nabhaaga,

whose descendent was Ambarisha, and

others.
