'Gita' the manual of Life

Hari Om,

Mr. Sunil Menon's call for more activity is worth

noting.

As we follow our cowherd friend it makes sense to look

in the manual (Gita)he has provided us.

Though I am not an expert I find the following stansas

indicates to the mechanics.

Stansa 6 of chapter 8 indicates the principle of how

things happen in the future. In general parlance we

say it as the 'power of the spoken word'

Regarding how our speech should be (how we need to

form our chat) is indicated in stansa 15 of chapter 17

Stansa 22 of chapter 7 shows the principle of how at

the end things really do happen (if we want this chat

to be lively, useful and pertinent).

Understanding and following them will result in

whatever we want.

Those of you who have a better grasp on the 'Gita' may

throw more light

Shri Balagopal,

I agree with Shri Raman; I think you were way off when citing Geeta 8.6 &

7.22---

8.6 is what will happen at the hour of death--whatever you think of or have set

your mind on at the hour of death, that you will become in the next birth; a

friend once told me abt a story he had heard abt this man who was always

suspicious of his wife and died deeply suspicious of her; and was then

immediately re-born as a stray dog who spent all its time at the gate of his

ex-wife's home--now he could always watch her..! sad story but a true one.

I think what you might have wanted to cite is 8.7-- power of the spoken word

happens when you " Tasmaat sarveshu kaaleshu Maamnusmar

yudhyacha;mayy-arpita-mano-budhir-maame-vaishyasa-asamshaya " -- " Remember me at

all times and fight, offer your mind and intelligence to me,you shall attain Me

without any doubt " because when you are in such close communion with God, it is

not you that speak, but the God in you!

You were on target with 17.15; that is

correct-- " Anudvega-karam-vaakyam,satyam-priya-hitam-cha-yat;

swadhyaay-abhyaasanam-chaiva vaanmayam-tapa uchyate " - 'truthful speech that is

pleasing, beneficial, and inoffensive to others and regular reading of the

scriptures is declared to be mental penance'-- to extend this freely to our

group, in a discussion forum like ours, many people are going to express their

opinions, interpret the slokas in their own way, each as per his/her capacities

and experiences; it is each person's duty to ensure that he or she utters/writes

words that expresses his/her opinion, but never be condescending abt it; not

belittle anyone. Whatever one is able to do is only because of God's grace.

I did look up 7.22, don't see how it is relevant; if you do, please enlighten

us.

I wd like to think 18.65 applies really well--one of the concluding statements

in the Geeta--this is how things turn out in the end

" Manmanaa-madbhakto-madyaji-maam-namaskuru;maamevaishyasi-satyam-te-pratijaane-p\

riyose-me! " -- 'Think of Me, be My devotee, worship Me, pay obeisance to Me,

truly do I promise you, you will surely come to Me "

Thanks for bringing this up though; a good example of how the slokas can/cannot

be applied to real life. I once had a Christian friend ask me, if the Geeta lays

guidelines on life; just like the Bible does about lying or stealing or being

unfaithful to one' spouse etc. And I said, No the Geeta doesn't do that; what it

does is teach you how to live; because when you learn to live so that you can

see the same divinity in everyone, if you can live so that you can treat joy and

sorrow (the two 'impostors' as Kipling put it!) in the same manner, and if you

can work so that all work is an offering to God, then you don't need any other

rules to live by!
