Guest guest
||| Hare Rama Krishna ||| Dear Sourav, Most intriguing, and good observation. Allow me to share the notes provided under the Shloka of Chapter 32 (Upa Pada) in BPHS (G.C. Sharma, Sagar Publications): ============================================================== Learned Astrologers are nto of the view with regard to finding out the Upa Pada. Some have taken the word “Anuchara” to mean “the son.” Therefore, they have regarded the 5th House as taken as synonym of the Son. The ancient commentators of Jaimini Sutras have regarded the 12th House as the Anuchara of the Ascendant. This is the reading in the Sutras – [Chapter I Quarter 4] Upapadam padan Pitranuchaarath …that is the Pada or Arudha of the House behind the Ascendant is the Upa Pada. The word “Pitr” in the Jaimini Sutras should be taken to mean the Ascendant. “Pitri” is one and therefore Lagna, Anuchara is that which follows. Therefore the term means the 12th House. The Pada o fthe Ascendant or the Lagna is of prime importance and this, the pada pf the 12th Houe is of secondary, and therefore called Gauana PAda or Upa Pada (sub pada) and in this way there may be Upa Pada od any House. The consideration of Upa Pada is made from the VYAYA Bhava (House of of expense or the house of destruction) of every house. Thus the Upa Pada of the Lagna or the Ascendant is considered on the nasis of the 12th House, of the 2nd House that of the Ascendant Lord, of the 3rd House on that of the 2nd House, etc. Consider the reading of Uttara Kalamrita in this respect: Evam Riphgrihaand bhavet upapadam tattrev soumye tada. Tajjaayaa hi suroopinee gunvati saa syaachirrum jeevinee …that is the Upa Pada is to be known from the House falling 12th from the House in question. If this upa Pada is pccupied by a benefic the native’s wife will be beautiful, will have good qualities and will be long lived. Some ancient commentators have written “saptamaatadpdamupapdam” and have taken the Saptam pada or the House of the wife as the upa Pad. Others read it as “Pitr anuchaaraat” and get the numeral 26011. Dividinf by 12 we get 7 as the remained. The upa Pada will be thepada or Arudha of the 7th House from the Ascendant. However, the view of Neela Kanta is as follows: “Pitranucharat” …which means 2nd from the Ascendant. If the ascendant is an even sign then the 2nd House is actually the 12th counted clockwise. Here “Anu” means following. For an Ascendant which is an odd sign, “anu” means behind and it is the 12th House. In our view, the House of the Upa Pada should be the 12th House. Therefore, Upa Pada we signs from the position of its lord and the sign which falls in that number will be Upa Pada. .. .. .. .. ============================================================== Hope some of this helps. Nitin. || Namah Shivaaya || The interpretation Maharshi Parashara's (very similar to Jaimini) sloka in BPHS about calculating the Upapada is somewhat confusing. Maharshi said Upapada is the "anuchara" or the house following the Ascendant bhava at birth. Normally it means the 12-th bhava because that is what is "following" the first bhava. But in the commentaries on Jaimini, e.g. Chaukhamb Hindi Edition, we find that for odd sign rising, 12-th house is considered upapada but for even sign rising, 2-nd house is considered upapada. Can any learned astrologer/acharya explain this? This information I received from Vedic Book Shelf's translation material.
