Guest guest
Namaste I have a basic doubt about the Gayatri Mantra. In some cases I find the Gayatri Mantra starting from " Om Tat savitur... " and in some cases it starts with " Om Bhur Bhuvah Swah.. " . What is the difference between the two? Which one of the two should be chanted normally? Also, does the Gayatri mantra end with OM? -Regards Rajarshi
Guest guest
Hi, I'm pasting the words earlier written by Narasimha below: " The expression " Om bhur bhuvah suvah/svah " is not part of the actual savitru gayatri mantra. The actual veda mantra starts with " tat savitur " and ends with " prachodayaat " . " Thanks KK , " rajarshi14 " <rajarshi14 wrote: > > Namaste > > > I have a basic doubt about the Gayatri Mantra. > > In some cases I find the Gayatri Mantra starting from " Om Tat savitur... Guest guest
Namaste, There are many ways to chant Gayatri mantra. All are valid and work differently. Swami Vivekananda, in one of his books, recommended chanting as " om tatsavitur ... prachodayaat om " I recommend declaring " Om bhuurbhuvassuvaH " once at the beginning (but not repeat it) and then chanting the above many times. Actually, for most people stuck in maayaa, it is very useful to chant " om hriim tatsavitur ... prachodayaat hriim om " Best regards, Narasimha Do a Short Homam Yourself: http://www.VedicAstrologer.org/homam Do Pitri Tarpanas Yourself: http://www.VedicAstrologer.org/tarpana Spirituality: Free Jyotish lessons (MP3): http://vedicastro.home.comcast.net Free Jyotish software (Windows): http://www.VedicAstrologer.org Sri Jagannath Centre (SJC) website: http://www.SriJagannath.org - " rajarshi14 " <rajarshi14 Tuesday, April 14, 2009 7:11 AM Gayatri Mantra > Namaste > > I have a basic doubt about the Gayatri Mantra. > > In some cases I find the Gayatri Mantra starting from " Om Tat savitur... Guest guest
Dear Ajit, >> I recommend declaring " Om bhuurbhuvassuvaH " once at the beginning (but >> not >> repeat it) > > Can you please explain why this should not be repeated? I do not say that it should not be repeated. One can of course repeat it also. But my *recommendation* is to repeat embedded in just om. One may note that bhuH, bhuvaH and suvaH are offered to Agni (fire), Vaayu (wind) and Surya (sun), who control the physical, conscious and spiritual realms of existence. Agni transforms matter and enables the everything in the physical realm. Vaayu causes movement and enables all the activities of consciousness. Surya is the all-filling soul of the universe and the lord of the spiritual realm. This is why offerings are made to Agni, Vayu and Surya in homam using om bhuuH svaahaa, om bhuvaH svaahaa and om suvaH svaahaa (respectively). One can remember the three realms of existence with *each* repetition of the mantra or one can just declare it once and focus on the mantra itself. Both are fine. The exact thought (or the point of contemplation) suggested by the two approaches is slightly different. If one can contemplate each time that " the physical, conscious and spiritual realms - all are filled with the effulgence of great Savita " , then one can repeat " om bhuurbhuvassuvaH " each time. Though I recommend just repeating the main mantra to keep the focus of contemplation simpler, I cannot say that the other way is wrong. Guest guest
Dear Ajit, I do not think Narasimha said one should not repeat Om bhuurbhuvassuvaH. As compared to not saying it all, he recommended chanting it once in the beginning. Now why not every time? One petty reason is that it takes longer to do so.
