Guest guest
While I was doing homam, my son (7 years) joined me for doing puja to his Siva lingam (he puts water with a spoon while chanting mrityunjaya mantram. He had taken a small bowl and put the siva lingam in it. I invited Sadasiva into Fire and the siva linga. So far so good. Very soon the bowl was full and my son was loosing focus and I thought since pouring water is helping him stay focussed on the puja, I shall help him before he gets distracted and goes away. I had taken the water he used already (and which filled the small bowl having the siva lingam) and poured that water into original container. Then the small bowl was empty again and he continued. How ever my son asked me if it okay to use the water that is already used. I told him, it is alright, as long as you are feeling you are doing the abhishekam to real God, water does not matter. It is your feeling that matters. Easily said. But, after wards the question was lingering: 1. While doing this, I have invariably moved the siva lingam in to which I have invited Siva. Is this a sin (this is like asking some one to sit in a sofa and then dragging the sofa around while the person is sitting in it) 2. I used the water used for abhishekam again for abhishekam. Is this okay? Best regards, Vijay
Guest guest
Namaste Vijay, Few things came to my mind after reading your message. * Your intentions were right. i.e. you wanted your son to stay focussed in the Puja hence you moved the Shiva Linga * If you lifted the Linga without having any sense of presence of Shiva then i think your own faith of invokation was lesser. This seems to be the case for many of us or Most of us. We invoke the deity in the Fire and Idol but then the prsence is forgotten. * Same goes for reusing of Water for Abhisheka. it gives that we didn't care much for Shiva. But It is your own good heart which immediately realised the error and provocated the thought of doubt. it was such a strong feeling that you wrote to the list. that shows your concern about the whole issue. In my opinion, both the points mentioned needs to be avoided hence forth. Though i feel Shiva is easy going and Bhole Baba who is reputed for not taking offense for such trivial issues. This seems to be the case for many of us or Most of us. We invoke the deity in the Fire and Idol but then the prsence is forgotten. When I moved, I mentally asked Siva to pardon me. So, I did not have any doubt about Siva presence when I moved it. How ever, if a person I respect is sitting in a sofa, I will try to avoid moving the sofa. But, if needed, I will request the guest to stand up and then move the sofa. In this case, if I had requested Siva to come to another object and after moving the siva linga, I restored him into Siva lingam, I would not have felt bad. How ever, I do not quite know if this is appropriate (I know how to ask Siva to come to yatha sthanam, but is there any procedure to shift the place of the God once he is invoked? > * Same goes for reusing of Water for Abhisheka. it gives that we didn't care much for Shiva. No, I won't agree your view here. I did not care about the act of abhisheka. I was seeing it merely as an act to glue my son to the seat. How ever, my son pour the water fast and hence I end up get lots and lots of water. I usually drink the water after he finishes the abhishekam. If I should not reuse the water, I won't be able to drink up all the water. May be I can use it for bathing the next day (but then storing the water becomes a regular activity). So, reusing the water seem to simplify the whole thing. Thanks for your kind responce. I treated Siva as a kid (if my son is in sofa watching TV, I won't hesitate to move the sofa - in this case I had mentally requested Siva not to mind; but in the end my son started doing it himself, (once the bowl was full, he took the siva lingam out and put it in the other container and continued that way. That is what made me think if I am misdirecting him. How ever, strangely I felt resonating sound while I was chanting mRtyunjaya mantra (felt as if there is chanting from with in me) and felt very well. So, I am sure Siva was not upset - but that could be because he is Siva. I will definitely try not to move the idol.
Guest guest
Namaste, Very happy Ugadi to you and everyone there. >When I moved, I mentally asked Siva to pardon me. That's it. I think that should suffice for occassional happenings. I have no idea of Mantra for shifting the lord temperorily. My point in Abhisheka was that, if we don't like to bath with reused water then we don't do that for The lord.If we wish to eat best quality food, we must strive to offer same quality if not the better as Naivedya. You know all this but still i wrote with the intentions that somebody coming to the list might get some idea in future. However, you are the best judge of your situation w.r.t. Abhisheka as you mentioned your practical difficulties. Vey happy Ugaadi, Cheti Chand, Gudi Padava, Navreh to every one from Andhra, Karnaataka, Maharashtra and Kashmir. Guest guest
Dear sir Ask your soul what was right n what was wrong? whatever urs soul says is right for you. Proper knowledge of rites is important, but better is devotion towards god and perform whatever u want and whichever way. 'Ishwara' is great and understands urs emotions. Rituals are ok but remember too much of them is obstacle for spritual sadhana.
