Guest guest
namaste, Shivaratri is " Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi Nishita-vyapini " Divide the night (sunset to sunrise) into 5 parts. When chaturdasi prevails during the middle part (when midnight occurs), that is the night during which shivarati is to be observed. Many priests are simply following the dates used in India. So be it. Those who know the details can try to be more careful. Incidentally, it is not clearcut even in India. For example, some members have posted to other e-mail lists conveying that Sringeri is celebrating it on the 5th, as per the word of the pontiff there. Even in the US, festivals may occasionally vary by one day between the east & west coasts. bhavadIyaH, ajit On Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 5:06 PM, Chandra Prakash <vedicstudent wrote: > > > > > > Dear Narasimha, > > Thank you for your enlightening and inspiring posts. > > Could you please clarify when we are supposed to celebrate MahaShivratri > this year in America. Generally, the tithi at sunrise is followed when one does not know the rule. In the case of shivaratri, the rule I specified earlier is agreed upon by the following texts. The only difference is when the rule is satisfied two days in a row. I have not come across a text that gives sUryodaya as a criteria. The texts that agree on the rule are: vaidyanAtha-diikShitiiyam parva-nirNayaH vrata-rAjaH kalpa-chintAmaNIH bhavadIyaH, ajit On Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 6:03 PM, Chandra Prakash <vedicstudent wrote: > > > > > > Dear Ajit, > > I am assuming your e-mail indicates that you believe Shivratri should be > celebrated on March 5 (at least on the east coast). Guest guest
OM NAMAHSHIVAAYA Dear Sri Narasimha P.V.R Rao Ji, Namaskar. Thanks for Ajit Krishna Ji's information and your clarrification. At the same time kindly permit me to put forward my request regarding such holy events. If it is possible to include people living in India also for such advice it will be of great help to us all to celebrate the events correctly. Because here also we have such discrepancy in day. As Krishna Ji has mentioned earlier, if the middle part of the tithi does not synchronize with midnight of the day, then how to celebrate the event correctly. With respects. Yours Sincerely, S.Dheenadayalan , Narasimha PVR Rao <pvr wrote: > > Namaste, > > As Ajit Krishnan has clarified correctly, Maha Shivaratri is to be observed on the night of March 5 (Wednesday - today) in the entire north America. > > Some temples in USA are observing it on Thursday night, but there ARE some temples that are observing it correctly on Wednesday. > > Happy Maha Shivaratri to all of you! > > Best regards, > Narasimha > > Do Ganapathi Homam Yourself: http://www.VedicAstrologer.org/homam > Spirituality: > Free Jyotish lessons (MP3): http://vedicastro.home.comcast.net > Free Jyotish software (Windows): http://www.VedicAstrologer.org > Sri Jagannath Centre (SJC) website: http://www.SriJagannath.org > > > ---- Chandra Prakash <vedicstudent wrote: > > Dear Narasimha, > > > > Thank you for your enlightening and inspiring posts. > > > > Could you please clarify when we are supposed to celebrate MahaShivratri this year in America. I looked up in JHora and thought it was Wednesday, March 5. Chaturdashi starts around 3 pm EST on March 5 and ends on Thursday, March 6 around 2 pm EST. I assumed that you would fast and pray the night of March 5 but our temple priests insists that we need to celebrate it on the midnight of March 6, when, in fact, it will be amavasya during the entire night... > > > > Thanks once again, > > Chandraprakash > > > > > > > > > > ___________________ _______________ > > Be a better friend, newshound, and > > know-it-all with Mobile.
