I firmly believe that I have no say or do in choosing the time and the matter of

these messages. They are all inspired by Sai himself and I am simply the media

to share these wonderful pictures of teerth Yatra with all of you..May Sai show

us all His presence and His leelas by taking us around the world to visit all

the sacred shrines thru these teerth Yatras. May Lord Shiva bless our souls by

killing all the ego and negative energies with in us. As usual, click on any of

the below pictures to see the larger view or to save them to your computer.. I

never thought that it would be possible for me to send the Teerth Yatra mails so

soon but I guess " What God gives is never exhausted, what man gives never lasts. "

Today , we will be going to visit the sacred Bhimashankar Temple Jyotirlinga in

Pune, Maharashtra - India Bhimashankar in Maharashtra is an ancient shrine,

enshrining Bhimashankara one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva. Bhimashankar is

located in the

village of Bhavagiri 50 km north west of Khed, near Pune. It is located 110 km

away from Pune in the ghat region of the Sahyadri hills. Bhimashankar is also

the source of the river Bhima, which flows south east and merges with the

Krishna river near Raichur. The other Jyotirlinga shrines in Maharashtra are

Tryambakeshwar and Grishneshwar. The Bhimashankara temple is a composite of old

and the new structures and is built in the Nagara style of architecture. It is a

modest temple yet graceful temple and it dates back to mid 18th century. The

shikhara of the temple was built by Nana Phadnavis. The great Maratha ruler

Shivaji is also said to have made endowments to this temple to facilitate the

carrying out, of worship services. As with other Shiva temples in this area, the

sanctum is at a lower level. Although the structure here is fairly new, the

shrine Bhimashankaram (and the Bhimarathi river) have been referred to in

literature dating back to the 13th

century CE. Saint Jnaneshwar is said to have visited Tryambakeshwar and

Bhimashankar. In some classics like Shiva Leelamrit, Gurucharitra,

Stotraratnakar etc., BheemaShankara is described as a woman. Gangadhar Pandit,

Ramdas, Sridhar swamy, narahari Malo, Gnaneshwar, and other saints describe

BheemaShankara as JyotirLinga. The temple of Bhima Shankara is built in

Hemadpanthi style. It is decorated with the Dashavatar statues. These are very

beautiful to look at. The Nandi temple is close to the main temple. A huge bell

weighing 5 mans(1 man=40 seens) is located close to the temple. It has 1721 AD

inscribed on it. When this bell is rung, the entire echoes with its sound. This

is called " Deepmaal " , which is common in the temples of the Maharashtra State of

India. Each branch of this structure is lit every night during prayers. It looks

very spiritual at that time. The worship of BhimaShankar is done, with

Rudrabhishek, Panchamrit snan, everyday. The Lord

is praised in rich words. On Mondays as well as other days, lot of devotees

flock here for Darshan. A big fete (mela) takes place on Maha Shivaratri

festival. The natural scenic beauty of this place is wonderful to look at.Legend

behind Bhimashankar Temple

According to the legends, once a demon called Bhima lived with his mother

Karkati in the dense forests of Dakini, on the lofty ranges of the Sahaydris. It

is said that Bhima was so cruel that every one was scared of him. But what

tormented Bhima was his curiosity regarding his own existence. One day, Bhima

urged his mother to tell him who his father was and why had he abandoned them in

the wilderness of the forest. His mother revealed that he was the son of

Kumbhakarna, the younger brother of the mighty King Ravana - the King of Lanka.

Bhima’s mother Kartaki also told him that Lord Vishnu in his incarnation as

Lord Rama annihilated Kumbhakarna. This infuriated Bhima and he vowed to avenge

Lord Vishnu.

Bhima performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma. The compassionate creator

was pleased by the dedicated devotee and granted him immense powers. With so

much power, Bhima began to cause havoc in the three worlds. He was hell bent in

the path of destruction of Dharma. He defeated King Indra and Lord Vishnu and

conquered the heavens. He also defeated a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva -

Kamrupeshwar and put him in the dungeons. All this angered the Gods and they

along with Lord Brahma beseeched Lord Shiva to come for their rescue to which

Lord Shiva agreed.

Tyrant Bhima asked Kamrupeshwar to worship him instead of Lord Shiva. When

Kamrupeshwar refused, Bhima raised his sword to strike the Shiva Linga. But as

soon as he raised his sword, Lord Shiva appeared before him in full

magnificence. Then the terrible war began. Holy sage Narad appeared and

requested Lord Shiva to put an end to this war. It was then that Lord Shiva

reduced the evil demon to ashes and thus concluded the saga of tyranny. All the

Gods and the holy sages present there requested Lord Shiva to make this place

his abode. Lord Shiva thus manifested himself in the form of the Bhimashankar

Jyotirlinga. It is believed that the sweat that poured forth from Lord Shiva’s

body after the battle formed the Bhimarathi River.

May the holy Jyotirlinga of Bhimashankar always be with us and bless our loved

ones.

Nag Phani- This is a beautiful spot called Naagphani (Snakes hood) near

Bhimashankar where one can see vast landscapes. Also an observant trekker can

see the rare and huge shekru (mountain squirrel).

Playing Hide and Seek with Baba

Sun and Moon, the eyes of the Divine

Playing by closing eyes, is childhood's shine

The Savior of all beings is even asked as " who is Baba? "

The questioning child knows not, within dwells Baba

The Fatherly Baba who holds the planets within

Is fond of childhood, which is devoid of botheration,

Acting as if caught in the hands of playing children

Longs most to show the right path to His dear ones,

This is Baba's Path...This is Baba's Ideal

This child-like innocence, if in elders exist, is a boon real

Our home, forever, would become Sai's dwelling place

Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu Gurur Devoh Maheshwar;

Gurur Shakshat Parambramha Tashmai Shri Gurur Veh Namah "

May the Merciful Sri Sai Baba always shower His grace on us and our families and

remove our problems and anxieties by giving us all - strength , goodluck,

success and happiness with peace of mind.
