Sai Baba used to reside in a Masjid (A prayer hall of Musims) and strangely

worshipping " Tulasi " plant at the entrance of the Masjid and chanting the name

of " Rama " perplexed the devotees whether he was a Hindu or Muslim. He used to

bless the Hindus by saying " Allah Malik " and Muslims by saying " Bhagawan Raksha

Karega " .

So when the one whom I have tremendous faith in ,taught me that there is no

difference between a temple and a Masjid-- then in this teerth Yatra-- why not

make the second stop at the Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai, Maharashtra- India.

The above picture is the Aerial View of Haji Ali Dargah..In 1431, a wealthy

merchant Haji Ali built this shrine in the sea 500 yards from Mumbai's shore.

Despite the fact that this structure is a mosque and dargah, it is extremely

famous amongst the Hindu population in Mumbai, Maharashtra and South Gujarat.

 

It is a common belief among people that if one pray’s at this dargah, his/her

wishes are fulfilled. Even I have been fortunate enough to go to this sacred

Dargah to seek Haji Ali's blesings, about 18 yrs ago before coming to USA ..

This is an exquisite example of Indian Islamic architecture, associated with

legends about doomed lovers, the dargah contains the tomb of Sayed Peer Haji Ali

Shah Bukhari.Imagine yourself in this crowd going towards the dargah.   

 

The Haji Ali Dargah was constructed in 1431 by a rich Muslim merchant, Sayed

Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who gave up all his worldly possessions before

making a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Sayed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari Hailing from Bukhara, in the ancient Persian

Empire and now in Uzbekistan, Bukhari travelled around the world in the early

1400s, and then settled in Mumbai.

 

As per the legends, surrounding his mystique, once the Saint saw a poor woman

crying on the road, holding an empty vessel. He asked her what the problem was.

She sobbed that that her husband would thrash her since she had stumbled and

accidentally spilled the oil she was carrying. He asked her to take him to the

spot where she lost the oil. There, he jabbed a finger into the soil and the oil

gushed out. The overjoyed woman filled up the vessel and went home. Later,

Bukhari had a recurring - and disturbing - dream that he had injured Mother

Earth by his act. Full of remorse, he soon fell ill and directed his followers

to cast the coffin carrying his body into the Arabian Sea

Other stories state that the great saint, Haji Ali left this world during his

journey to Mecca and miraculously his casket carrying his body floated back to

these shores.On Thursdays and Fridays, the shrine is visited by at least 40,000

pilgrims. Irrespective of faith and religion, people visit the 'dargah' to get

the blessings of the legendary saint.

 

 

The accessibility to the dargah is very much dependent on the tides. As, the

causeway is not bound by railings, when the causeway gets submerged during the

high tides, it becomes inaccessible. Therefore, the dargah is accessible only

during low tide . This walk on the causeway, with the sea on both sides, is one

of the highlights of a trip to the shrine.

The whitewashed structure occupies an area of 4,500 square metres, and an 85

foot (26 m) tower is the architectural highlight of the edifice.

 

 

The five hundred year old Dargha Structure has corroded, due to constant

erosion, saline winds and constant flow of 80,000 people per week.

The structural upgradation of the Dargha has started in October 2008.The dargah

will be beautified with first and second quality white marble, which will be

brought from Makrana, Rajasthan, the same place from which marble for the Taj

Mahal had been brought.When the reconstruction work is complete, the holy shrine

will give the feel of a Taj right in Mumbai’s brackish sea water.

 

The holy Haji Ali Dargah has a yard which is filled with people, busy soothing

their parched throats and having snacks. The soft wind blowing in your face in

the serene surroundings of the dargah leave you with a heavenly feel.

 

The dargah is crowded with people every Thursday and Friday. The places where

men and women sit in the dargah are demarcated from each other. This is

according to the Muslim customs and beliefs

The main hall has marble pillars embellished with artful mirror work: blue,

green, yellow chips of glass arranged in kaleidoscopic patterns interspersed

with Arabic patterns which spell the ninety-nine names of Allah.

 

 

Behind the sculpted entrance, a marble courtyard contains the central

shrine.The tomb within the mosque is covered by a brocaded red and green chaddar

(tomb cover sheet). It is supported by an exquisite silver frame, supported by

marble pillars.

 

 

May Sayed Peer Haji Ali Shah shower His kind grace upon us and help us all to

become a better human being...

I would like to end this trip to Haji ali with a small note about Allahu akbar

--A very few of us know the actual meaning of this word: Allahu Akbar is

translated as “God is greater.†Another translation is, “God alone is

great, the greatest and not to forget ,Our Sadguru Sainath always said - Allaah

Maalik hai!!!!

Helping the Needy is the Great Virtue

To do good to others is to promote their welfare. God bestowed on man the

capacity to help the living beings. It is not only our capability but it is our

responsibility too. Helping others is the best of the human Dharma. If one bird

gets trapped, many birds flock around it and attract the attention of others so

that the trapped bird may be released and saved. If birds have such a good trait

of love and concern to help each other, man, blessed with intellect and wisdom,

should be more kind and considerate to his fellow beings. One may help when

asked for help. It is God's help if one lends, unasked, his helping hand to the

one in distress or in great need. Man should rise to such moral heights. To do

good to the one who did good to us is a mark of humanity. It is Baba's

philosophy that we should do good to the one who did hurt us. To love our

enemies is divine. Selfishness aims at gains for one's self. Great are people

who help others at their own loss.

God loves such souls of selflessness. Ordinary people may help others as long

as they do not lose much. Self-interest rules their minds. Some people

deliberately hurt others whose success they are jealous of. They hurt others

even if they did not lose anything. It is better to avoid the company of the

evil-minded. Only those with a heart full of love will be happy to serve the

society. Baba-blessedly, they always live gladly.
