Guest guest
Dear brothers & sisters Does anyone know of a book that gives detailed translations of vedic chants? I have a book that just gives a couple of lines outlining the general feeling of each chant, but not much detail. I understand a word for word translation could go on for pages & there may be half a page written about just one word, but still I'd like to read it... The 2 volumes of Rig Veda Samhita by Dr R L Kashyap are also great. Both the writers above are inspired from " Secret of the Veda " by Sri Aurobindo . love Shantnu
Guest guest
namaste You can also look at this site http://www.aryasamajjamnagar.org/ This is a Hindi site and contains the ENTIRE COMMENTARY of Swamy Dayananda on the Vedas besides Swamy's other writings. BTW, I am writing this after writing this week's sloka for my gita group. In second chapter from 43 to 53rd sloka Krishna lambasts Vedas Venkat

My understanding is that the samhita chants we do are from the Taittiriya Samhita which is part of the Yajurveda rather than the Rig Veda. I still cant find an english translation for them. Any more ideas would be much appreciated. With love Farah

These chants are repeated, just set to a different tone(as in Sam Ved), or used for practical purposes(like healing as in Atharva Veda). Regards English translation, unfortunately I couldnt find any either. You'll have to goto India to find them. Even then there is no gurantee- many translations I found in India(in both Hindi & English) were by western trained academics(even Indians), who consider the Vedas nothing more than primitive mumbo jumbo worshipping natural forces. If you are still interested, David Frawley is the most serious Vedic scholar in modern times. He has done the most to popularise Vedic teachings. You can contact him via his website, he will know for sure: http://www.vedanet.com/ http://www.vedanet.com/index.php?option=com_contact & task=view & contact_id=1 & Itemi\ d=26 with love Shantnu

Even then there is no > gurantee- Dear Shantnu & others I just wanted to let you know I came to a complete dead end with this one. I e mailed David Frawley at the American institute of vedic studies. He replied within minutes advising me to contact South Asia Books, USA & also Motilal Banar, India. I did so & have finally heard that neither of them stock such a book. What a pity... but I'll still keep on chanting just the same, with the brief translations I have in my books. With much love Farah

Please look at the following mail from Prof Dr Harish Chandra which I received sometime back. All the details you requested are here. ------\ --------------------- Namaste: I am just curious, where do you live? I live in H'bad but I am on an extended lecture tour to UK, USA and Canada and will return home Jan 7, 2009. My mobile there 094410 81795. My current UK Mobile: 0044 750 785 0749. Kindly reply to me at my personal ID: harish_divs <harish_divs that appears in Cc too. I wanted to write to you earlier when you were on the verge of buying English translation of Vedas. I would have liked to suggest to obtain the entire set of 22 vols (translated by Svami Satyaprakashji) at Rs 6000 from: DAV Publication Division Arya Samaj Building UP Block Pitampura, Delhi 110034 Tel: 011 - 2732 1552, Email: davpubdiv <davpubdiv Out of this set of 22, Ajay Arya has a stock of 14 vols only - so, that wouldn't be a complete set. Actually, the list price for the set of 22 is Rs. 8525, but when you call them - tell them " you sold it for Rs. 6000 to Dr Harish Chandra of H'bad - he only recommended that I purchase from you " - I hope they will give you the discount. The discount scheme has run out of time by now! I have just made a reply to yr query on Vedic word in the forum. I look forward to interacting with you more closely in future as much as time permits. I see, you make many good queries. But, due to shortage of time and constant travels, I am unable to write even though I would very much like. Let us have a bilateral correspondence - but don't load me with too many questions. I can deal with all of them when we are able to personally meet. I hope, you are on the mailing lists of SpiritMag and Vedoday2050 - my 2 monthly articles. Best Wishes in Your Quest for Truth, = Harish Chandra
