Hence it is not true that fear is our friend only . Fear is our great friend, as it helps us avoid dangerous situations. A professional interviewed serveal rape/mugging victims. In almost every case, the victim felt some fear before the attack, their instinct warning them there was danger, that they should leave. But in each case, conditioned by the society which calls such things " superstitious " , they ignored their gut feeling, & hence became victims. The problem is, what is fear? The dictionary defines it as feeling apprehension, distress. Most people think fear is when their hands start sweating ,body shaking, body gets cold etc. But all these things are side effects of adrenaline, a chemical the body releases when it senses we are in danger. It makes us resistant to pain, able to run/hit very fast - so we can either fight the enemy or run away. Unfortunately, the body is often confused, & releases this chemical even when not required- like when go for interview, when we sit for exams, when we are asking someone for a date. So what most people think of fear is just reaction to adrenaline. Once you know this, you can function easily even when adrenaline is high, as it is just a natural bodily reaction. After all, soldiers are trained to work even under extreme adrenaline situations. But why does the body release this chemical? Its because the mind/ego feels threatened, & the body goes into its " Fight or flight " state, which we inherited from animals. But included in this fear is our natural instinct, which we also inherited from animals, & which is very reliable. Unfortunately, due to wrong teachings, this part of our self is repressed, with tragic effects for crime victims. If we use this fear to strengthen our self, fear becomes our friend, as it forces us to challenge our assumptions, & grow spiritually. If however, we use it to strengthen our ego, we get stuck in an endless loop of self pity, the " Poor me, the whole world is against me " . So is fear our friend? Yes, if we are brave enough to challenge those things that threaten our ego. with love Shantnu

Guest guest
Dear Shantnuji and Jitendraji, Yes, the negative changes in the body and mind associated with fear is well known. Fear also has positive aspects as Shantnuji has said. It warms us up, goads us into action and often a great motivator to wake up and start attending to the impending work which we otherwise tend to neglect/procrastinate to our own peril later on. If we do not fear ( anxious/afraid ) of Examination, we do not prepare well/adequate too! In fact, as the anxiety increases, our performance also become effective as it releases stored up energy(glucose) in the body through secretion of adrenalin and so on. No anxiety, boredom and lethargy, lack of motivation is the result! However, fear beyond a point of coping becomes debilitating and even harmful. In other words, too much of anxiety or too little of anxiety, both are 'bad', the just, the optimum is the ideal - homeostasis, balance, samatva is the key. Let me share an incidence to illustrate the protective/positive nature of fear, a tragic one at that. Albert Camus, we all know, was a famous and extraordinarily creative writer( Stranger, some translated as Outsider too, a novel, Rebel, a philosophical and political essay and many, many works he has written ) had a fear of (phobia for) automobiles. He never used to travel in it, used only trains. Once, he and his friend a well known publisher, Victor Golanz, were to travel form a place, no trains were available at that time and Golanz suggested that they could drive to Paris, he himself would drive, only Camus has to give up his 'irrational' fear. Camus was reluctant because of the fear but the friend's insistence, urgency and lack of options made him agree. Car they were traveling met with an accident, Camus died on the spot, there were no other casualities. If only Camus heeded to his fear, he would have been saved for now. Some time it pays to love our fear and nurture it! Regards, M.S.Thimmappa.

Very negative people invite their own troubles- because they are obsessed with wrong things happening to them, they continually attract the very negativity they are trying to avoid. Thats why you always see the same people getting into fights, having troubles, always helpless victimes. Some people go from one misery to another- their life is like a Saas-Bahu serial & they enjoy it!(at least sub conciously) This is the sort of self-obsessed fear we have to get rid of, before we can contact our real intuitive wisdom. love Shantnu
Guest guest
Dear Shantnuji, Albert Camus was a very positive, very optimistic person and his writings always emphasized the value of genuine love. He was hugely humanistic. The kind you describe is not applicable to him. You are right, there are negative people, sick people, inviting upon themselves troubles of that kind. I was not talking about that kind when I was discussing on how some fears are protective and positive in nature. I have encountered too many people of kind of phobia/negative fear that you refer to in my Clinical Psychology Practice! M.S.Thimmappa.
