One more question, why is Patanjali Maharishi depicted as half upper

part of human body exposed and the lower half wound with seven headed

snake? can some one enlighten please.

Frankly i have never seen Sage Patanjali depicted as you say but

symbolically it only means he had awakened his kundalini power

and the seven heads represents seven chakras in the body.

Senthilji,

 

Another reason, other than what Sudhakarji has said, why seven headed

snake is depicted in the picture of sage Patanjali may be that

according to a lore, it is Adisesha, the king of serpents and the bed

of Lord Vishnu was born as Patanjali!

Senthilji, the snake may stand for the Kundalni Shakti - as you know

many Gods like Vishnu, Shiv are shown with snakes around them.

 

The 7 heads maybe the 7 chakras that the Kundalni has to cross.
