Guest guest
Dear Jitendraji, You have asked for the 24 words divided into three parts of eight words each in Gayatri mantra and the best time to chant the same. Here is one answer: Gayatri means, gai or gay = to sing/chant, tra = to protect, the mantra which protects one who sings or chants it. The Mantra has three parts : the vyahrtis, the Gayatrimantra proper, and the gayatrisiras. 1.vyahriti means 'uttering',Brahma, the creator, is said to have uttered these at the beginning of creation, hence this appellation. Vyahritis are ( in eight words ) : Om, Bhu, Bhuva, Suva, Mahar, Jana, Tapa, Stya/Brahma. Om refers to Brahman, the ultimate reality/Source,remaining seven refers to seven lokas(world) - earth and above; we can add loka to all those seven after the word like bhu loka, Bhuvar loka and so on. 2.The Mantra proper ( in eight words ) :tatsavitur, varenyam, bhargo, devasya, dhimahi, dhiyo, yona, pracodayat. In free translation it means - ' We meditate upon that effulgence of God, the creator. May he guide our intellect '. 3. The gayatrisiras ( in eight words ) : Om, apo, jyoti, rasomritam, brahma, bhu, bhuva, suvar, - meaning, 'Om. He is water, light, flavour, ambrosia and also the three worlds'/bhu,bhuva,suvar. Usually, mantra proper alone is used for chanting. The best time to chant is the sandhyakala, at about sun rise and sun set. Hope it will suffice. Source : Swami Harshananda ( 2008 ) : A Concise Encyclopaedia of Hinduism ( in three volumes ).
