Namaste Anusuyaji, Have you read my previous post on the Yoga Sutras? The mind is a Sattvic instrument- it exists in the pure light, balance & harmony of Satogun. Yet due to influence of Rajogun & Tamogun on the mind(due to our materialistic tendencies), the minds purity is lost, & it becomes an instrument of confusion, ignorance, instead of the instrument of knowledge & bliss it actually is. This sick mind is always confused, running here & there(under influence of Rajogun), or lethargic, depressed(due to Tamogun). The silencing of the mind is taking the mind to its original state of purity, pure Satogun, where it starts relfecting light of Purusha(God), instead of reflecting the objects of material world under pressure from the sense organs, which only brings it misery. There are several ways to do this. The 2 main are Raj Yoga, which tries to silence the mind using will power. This is very difficult for most people. The 2nd way is Hatha Yoga, which tries to silence mind by 1st controlling Pran. The Pran & mind are linked- they are like the 2 wings of a bird. Even if 1 of them is cut, the bird cannot fly. Raj Yogis try to silence the mind using another part of the mind, which results in Pran also becoming calm, while Hatha Yogis try to silence the Pran, which automatically calms mind. > Can it be done while being in domestic life with so many >disturbances around? In fact that is the only way to do it. By running away from the world, so called " sadhus " went into a sort of temporary peace, but this peace was a fraud. The 1st Apsara that came dancing destroyed their " peace " . The mind has to become disinterested in the objects of the world, while it is in contact with those objects. For those who are highly materialistic, a small break meditating in the jungles, or near holy places, is advisable, but this is only a temporary solution, till they can become strong enough to return to world & continue their sadhna. with love shantnu
