Soumyaji, Hatha Yoga shouldnt be learnt from books.... In every town of every country in the world there are many Yoga centers. It is best to learn from a proper teacher, then you can practice at home. The Asans have different benefits- some make us relaxed, some active. Some massage the spine, some release tension in shoulders or hips. Some work on particular chakras, while some just increase flow of Pran in body(which indirectly helps open chakras). A good teacher will create a balance between all these factors, so no part of body is left. Also, these Asans have some contradictions, & should only be approached in certain ways. Head stand shoud never be done unless you have made you neck , shoulder & arms strong by other asans. Another problem with doing by yourself at home is- the asans need certain alignments in the body to be successful. A proper teacher will tell us these. When doing at home, one is usually lazy, & doesnt push oneself to do the Asans in a perfect way, while in a class, by seeing others, we are also inspired to do the Asans perfectly. So I recommend that you join a Yoga class. It will tell you the weaknesses in your body. Then you can create you own plan to work with those weaknesses. This is the part where books help - they can tell you which Asan is good for which problem, or which are good for meditating, but books cannot teach you the actual Asans. love Shantnu

As a Yoga Therapists what i would recommend is that you should cover following 11 points while performing yoga routine. They are 1. warm-up 2. all body stretch 3. forward bend 4. backward bend 5. sideways bend 6. abdominal muscle control 7. abdominal muscle squeeze 8. poised sitting 9. leg limbering 10. inverted postures and 11. total relaxation. With these eleven points choose any asanas which are easy to perform. Now how you will decide on that and therefore for that you need an experienced teacher to guide you, so doing it on your own is fraught with danger. Ofcourse you may say, you cannot afford to go to yoga class or that there are no yoga classes where you live etc., etc., In that case i would recommend one asana called VAJRASANA which can be done before eating, during eating and after eating. This is the same asanas muslims use while praying and Japanese Geisha girls sit in while singing and entertaining their guests. The benefits of some of the asanas from your list of 10 are as follows:- Shavasana (corpse posture) should be done after completing of your yoga routine. You may miss any one or two asanas from your routine but shavasana missing is strictly not allowed. It is beneficial to all but specially to stressed people, high bp patients and heart patients. Vakarasana is specially beneficial in strengthening all the organs lying in the abdomen, specially liver, pancreas and spleen. Sethubandasana is dynamic asana and is good for strengthening your spine and cervical bones (i.e. your neck bones). Pavanmuktasana is good for getting rid of excess gas in the stomach and to reduce your paunch. Makrasana is dynamic as well as relaxing asana. Dynamic because when you perform it all the organs in your stomach are squeezed and thus strengthening them and relaxing because of the peculiar raised head position which soothes your frayed mental nerves. Sarvangasana as the name indicates it is beneficial to all the parts of the body. You get practically all the benefits of shirsana (headstand) without the dangers and risk of performing it. Hope this satisfies all the doubts you had and if you still need any answer please do not hesitate to ask. With warm wishes, Sudhakar HARI OM TAT SAT! Cheers! ) > > friends, i wish to know what are the basic yogasanas for beginners..
