Guest guest
In Vedic times, the Gods were not Gods as we think of them now, rather powers of 1 Supreme, indescribable Spirit(Brahm, Shiv, Narayan). Each God contained all the others. There were 4 main- Indra who represented Plane of Sat(or pure Truth), he also represented Divine Mind(as Indra= King of Indriya or senses). Agni represented Chit or Plane of pure consiousness. Soma represented Anand or plane of Pure Bliss. Combined, they represented Sat-Chit-Anand, which is how the Sagun Brahm is described. There was a 4th Deva- Surya for the Vigyan or Plane of Pure Intuitive Wisdom. The Vedic Rishi didnt pray to these Gods like in later times people prayed to Vishnu/Shiv. Rather he asked them to bring down the energies of the plane they represented. The hero of the Vedas was Indra, the Divine Mind. He represents what men should be like. Any untruth, falsity angers him, & he attacks with his thunderbolt(which represents instant enlightenment, like thunder falling). Unlike modern men, he doesnt believe in compromise, cowardice or unmanliness. Wherever there are demonic forces at work, Indra strike them down. But he is not some chauvanistic, barbaric male. He is above the uncivilised man, tied to his ignorance, but also above the civilised man, tied to rules of society and his mental ideas of how the Universe should work. Indra is the Man of Pure Spirit, who does what is right without caring what others think og him, who dares challenge the forces of darkness & ignorance, the hero who slays the dragon of ignorance. Indra is the Divine Mind, that allows us to access the Truths of the Higher planes. In Vedic parlance, the rivers of heaven are always flowing. These rivers are streams of wisdom that also descend upon human world from the higher worlds. But we, with our ego, block these streams(the Highest of these streams is Saraswati, who gives us Brahm Gyan, but more on Her later). So in Vedic terms, to get enlightenment, all we have to do is clear the blocks that wont allow Divine energies to descend upon us, blocks we *ourselves* have put up. These streams are blocked by Vritra, a huge snake that represents our lower Ego. When Indra arises(through meditation, or when we call him through Vedic rituals) this anger him. He bursts open the clouds, & strikes Vritra down. This allows a rain of water to rain down on the Sadhak. Remember, water here means energies that descend upon us from Higher planes. Indra is the God of rain in this sense. The snake can also represent the Kundalni, so slaying it is opening the blocks in chakras that stop it from ascending. To end , heres a beautiful verse from Frawleys book, Wisdom of Ancient Seers: " The Child of the Virgins who was eaten by ants, Lord of Shining horses, you bore him from the nest. Grasping the serpent, the blind man saw clearly. The cauldron vanished; his joints were reunited. " The child of virgins is our inner Divine soul, born from the Goddess(many religons, not just Christianity talk of virgin birth. The Goddess is virgin, as she needs no one else to create the world). The ants are the worldly desires, that slowly eat us to death liek ants. Indra rescues us from this trap. The serpent is the Kundalni, & grasping it is controlling it & the Chakras, which can onlybe done with the Divine Mind , not by our lower logical or emotional mind. This makes us see through Maya, hence the blind man sees. The cauldron is the transformations we need to awaken our Kundalni, & combine our various broken parts into 1 complete Divine Conciousnes. The snake or serpent is the power of ignorance that divides, while Indra is the power of wisdom that unites. This story of the legend, also famous in Europe(which was once Vedic) of the hero who kills the dragon & rescues the princess, in this case Kundalni. Other Devas, I will write next weekend. love Shantnu
Guest guest
Great Interpretation ShanJI. I always see a statue of two serpents coiled together, in our temples here & mostly these statues are place on the outer side of the main temple. Does this coiled serpents statue was a representation of Kundalini? or i was always thinking that our ancestors knew about the DNA structure!!! could you enlighten on this please. Thanks. Shivaya Namah Aum.

The 2 coiled serpents are the Ida & Pingala Nadi, which coil around the center Nadi sushmna, which is in the spinal cord. The fact that the DNA structure is also coiled is no co-incidence- it just shows everything in the Universe is related to everything else. There is an underlying harmony & rythm to the Universe, which science also accepts, though they say it is just a blind mechanical force. We say it is because the Universe itself is intelligent- intelligent in the way a poet or a painter is, not some dry intellectual. love Shantnu
