Hello Farahji,

Namaste!

Exactly what you have shown on the link. In brief laughter club

was started in Mumbai by Dr. Madan Kataria. Now it has spread

throughout India and other countries too.

Inspired by that I along with a doctor and a social worker

started laughter club. I was the chief anchor person in

conducting this laughter club. Believe me it was no joke with

practically everyone pulling your leg. Further many wanted to

join but were scared stiff about what others will think. They

questioned me how you do it.I replied it is simple just open up

and laugh to your hearts content.

In Dr. Kataria's club there are about 15 types of laughter. I am

not in favour of that. I feel there are only two main types of

laughter. One is patiala laughter (Gregarious laughter) and the

other one is giggling laughter of girls. The other types is just

adoption to suit your need which looks very artificial therefore

where i started it i held only two above mentioned laughs plus

some yogic exercise, plus clap theraphy, plus sound theraphy i.e.

chanting of Aum and you end the session with positive affirmation

by punching your fist in the air simultaneously loudly affirming

positive affirmation.

If you have still further queries please do not hesitate to ask.

With warm wishes,

Sudhakar

Dear brother

This is very interesting but Im not sure I could laugh on command - I

think you would have to tell me or show me something funny first. Do

people really manage to genuinely laugh?

I have done some Dru yoga workshops where positive affirmations are

used (Im going to one on saturday) but they are only repeated

silently in the mind. How does it work if you are all shouting them

out? Do you all shout the same affirmation, or different ones?

And what is clap therapy? Im interested.

With love

Hello Farahji,

Namaste!

Re your query on laughter and clap theraphy and positive affirmations

here is my reply.

First let me quote from OSHO'S booklet - meditation, an ectasy.

BE AS BLISSFUL AS POSSIBLE, BE CHEERFUL, SMILE AND LAUGH.

DON'T WAIT FOR ANY REASON TO LAUGH. JUST LAUGH LIKE A MADMAN,

FOR NO REASON AT ALL. LAUGHTER IN ITSELF IS ENOUGH, IT NEEDS NO

REASON. IT IS HEALTH-GIVING. IT IS SUCH AN EXERCISE FOR THE BODY

AND FOR THE SOUL, BOTH. STOP ONLY WHEN TEARS START COMING

TO YOUR EYES. THAT MEANS FULL STOP.

Agreed it is difficult to induce artificial laughter without reading

a joke, or hearing a funny story or seeing a comedy movie or seeing

live somebody triping on a banana skin. But when we all gather as a

group and start laughing literally like a madman/madwoman it becomes

easy. In my group there were more ladies then men. This is because

of male ego while women without inhibition laugh freely.

When i was teaching yoga to a district commissioner in the end i

decided to hold laughter theraphy for him and his wife and the DC

bluntly refused to participate while his wife agreed. No amount of

coaxing could work and then i challenged him if he could give me a

good reason i would not conduct laughter session. He said while you

conducted 3 months yoga course you have made us laugh in plenty but

now i am not going to laugh. I said the course is not over until you

participate in laughter and i touched the raw nerve of his by

saying he was egoistic and scared of what other people will think

etc., etc., Lastly i said this laughter is between you, your wife

and me no fourth person is here so give a good performance. At last

he agreed and then once he opened up it was easy for him.

Similarly the DC before him was more practical and when i said that

frown look is ok and needed in your office but here i am the boss

and you should hold smiling face when i teach. No one had dared a

DC like that and being sportsman he really had a bellyful laughter

at my remark. So all in all woman easily smile and laugh but for

men ego, upbringing etc., etc., all come in the way but if anyone

comes to my session the person is sure to laugh no matter how grouchy

he may be.

This session is held by me standing at a place and rest of the

participant standing in a semi circle in front of me. At a command

we all breathe in and then raise our hands and start laughing

literally like a madman/madwoman as villains laugh in movie

ha ha ha he he he etc., etc., This is done about four times then

we switch to free hand exercise as well as yogic ones like

brahmamudra (neck exercise to stimulate thyroid and parathyroid gland

along with strengthening cervical bones) For this neck exercise

(brahmamudra) i tempt the ladies by stating if you want your

husband or boyfriend to gift you real pearl necklace and you can

demand it by showing streamlined neck region by doing this exercise.

to be continued.....

continuation of laughter theraphy...

After brahmamudra we switch again to giggling laughter. I found

this laughter difficult to express so i innovated it by pointing

accusing fingers at your neighbour or anybody you fancy and then

laugh in a giggling fashion. I found everybody could execute it

beautifully with lot more enthusiasm. After this we switch to

clap therapy.

In olden days when bhajan and kirtans were held all use to clap

continuously at the same time chanting god's name in the process

everyone became healthy physically and rich spiritually by chanting

god's name. As per Acupressure teachings all the never endings

of major organs end in our palms and under the feet. When you clap

continuously it stimulates practically all the organs of the body.

Later on when cymbals were introduced it lost the good effect on

health and that is what is captured by doing clap theraphy.

Again this is done in a quick fashion otherwise in a park to just

clap without singing or chanting is just boring. So clapping is

first done by keeping left hand down and right hand held above it

and in a rhythmic fashion you clap to a count of five stop again

repeat and do in this fashion 4 times. Then alternate with right hand

down and clapping with left hand. This also is done 4 times.

Next hold the hands in front of you with palms facing each other

and again clap in a rhythm repeating 4 times. Lastly clap

alternatively on each hand again 4 times and thus ends clapping

session.

Now comes Aum chanting which is sound theraphy. One can chant

Aum as in Ooooommmm or split into AaaaaOooooMmmmm. I prefer later

so that abdominal breath, midchest and upper clavicular regions

are filled with life giving prana and the whole body is nicely

aerated with this method wherein you breathe all the 3sections of

the body and instead of letting out the air (breathing out) you

chant aaaaoooommmmm when breathing out automatically takes place.

I prefer auspicious number of 11 or 21 times chanting depending

on the availability of time.

The session ends with everyone saying common positive affirmation

which goes like this. .....We are the happiest people in the

world.....(say it 3 times loudly almost screaming) followed by

we are the healthiest people in the world also repeated 3 times.

The session ends and it takes about half an hour and practically

everyone is upbeat, happy and fully charged ready to face the day

because we do this in the early morning at 6.00 a.m. to 6.30 a.m.

Trust this covers everything you asked for. If this need further

clarification please do not hesitate to ask.

Meantime give me some more time to post about environment purity.

With warm wishes,

Sudhakar

Dear brother Sudhakar

Thankyou - this is very thorough, just as I expected from you - but

just a couple of questions.

The clapping - is there any significance in doing 5 claps & repeating

this 4 times? or can any number be used?

The chanting - can you tell me why you describe the number 11 as

auspicious? (It is a very special number to me.)

I think the positive affirmations are good, but I always like to

allow people to choose their own & repeat them silently, otherwise

you could sometimes be pressing buttons for some people. Some people

may not be the healthiest or the happiest. Im all for positive

language & am of the opinion that if you believe it then it will be.

But if I had someone in my class whose mother had died the week

before & they had been diagnosed with cancer, Im just glad they are

doing yoga without asking them to state things that may not sit well

with them. Having said all that brother, I have been to one dru yoga

workshop ( & am going to another today) where positive affirmations

are spoken & its quite incredible the positive feelings that can be

induced, especially when everyone is working as one. Ha ha - have I

just contradicted myself? Oh well, its all healthy discussion & Im

open to having my opinion altered no problem. :-)

How funny that we are discussing this - I went to a yoga morning just

on wednesday & was asked to laugh! Not easy at first, but it soon

spread like wildfire!

With love

Dear Farah, sudhakar will reply ...let me add my cent. There are

certain accupressure points on palms that affect the heart... so when

we clap we actually put pressure on these points and regular clapping

reduces risk of heart attack and sugar.

Laughter is actually a sort of pranayama... you throw away the breath

in a jerk in laughing..so it is like Bhastrika pranayma. Laughter

also reduces risks of heart attack and blood pressure. In delhi i

have seen many people in the park in the early morning, clapping or

laughing in groups

Hello Farahaji.

Namaste!

No! there is no significance in selecting 5 and 4 for clapping.

I just selected that as the minimum number ( 5-----4)but if

anybody has time they can definitely go for more.

I had read many years back in Times of India one person in Delhi

claps his hand continuously for 1 hour and has cured his cataract

problem. Seeing that many have joined and have started clap group.

But this is really too much unless accompanied by chant of God's

name as it would be very boring and painful. In fact the least

number i use if you try you will experience little pain for

beginners-specially those who are sensitive. So proceed with

caution.

From what little i know number 11 and 21 are considered

auspicious because in Hindu way of Life when you give a

gift of money it is never 10 rupees or 20 rupees but it is

11 or 21 signifying continuity for more while 10 and 20 or

other numbers ending in zero like 50 or 100 as well is

considered full stop sort of stagnant hence one added gives

more vibration, symbolically signifying more to come.

If there are other explanations i don't know perhaps Aum/Shantanu/

Aradhana or the rest of the co-travellers may throw more

light on this.

In ...well... re affirmations to each his own.

About your laughter spreading like wildfire is no big deal

for us who regularly laugh because we are used to it. I am

glad you could bring yourself to laugh.

Did you know Laughter is healthy

internal jogging

improves your face value

confuses the opposition

and still many more.

With warm wishes,

Sudhakar
