Guest guest
Dear brothers & sisters Whilst I was away today, I was chanting the Gayatri Mantra & was thinking - Why are there different versions of the Gayatri Mantra? Which one is the most authentic? I know it's only a slight difference, but why do some start - 'Aum bhur bhuva svaha, that savitur varaynyam....' But others miss out '...bhur bhuva svaha' & just chant 'Aum, that savitur varaynyam...' Is it quite usual to find different versions of some chants & why is this? With much love Farah

Dear Farah .. i have never heard a Gayatri mantra without bhur buva swaha... as it would make gayatri mantra incomplete. There are some gayatri mantras for other forms of gods too like for Ganesha... so it is possible that in those mantras they dont use bhur bhuva etc. The main gayatri mantra is said to be known to enlightened souls only.. the one we chant is actually a compressed form of main mantra perhaps shantnu or sudhakar would like to add Aum
Guest guest
, " Aum " <beirut_ka_baba wrote: Hello Farahaji and Aumji, Greetings! Re both your queries on Gayathri mantra. It is true as aumji said there are gayathri ganesha as well as gayathri lakshmiji and other gods and goddess. True gayathri aumji you are right is not available to us. Let me explain further. The rishi who gave gayathri to the world found gayathri so powerful that many started using it for nefarious activity even at that time, so he cursed the gayathri mantra and deleted some of the wordings from the main mantra but even then the gayathri is still a powerful mantra. One brahmin told me, brahmins have given all health, wealth, progeny etc., mantra to the world but have kept gayathri mantra the mother of all mantras with themselves. There are many multiple uses of the gayathri mantra existing now. When i was anchor person for the laughter club i was told by one person attending the same that his ancestors from kerala to teach then existing king a lesson for the tyranny he was reigning on the people in hush hush manner at midnight in particular group and sequence chanted reverse gayathri mantra leading to the death of the king. Agreed the murder was justified but you cannot wipe out the karma and it seems they knew about it and they say even now, the descendant of those group of brahmins are cursed never to have male child in their line of progeny. The maximum exploitation of the mantra is by the brahmins ofcourse. I read a small booklet many years ago written in marathi language. The author from Pune city said gayathri with 3 aums should be chanted by brahmins only, with two aums by ruling class i.e. shatriyas only, single aum by vaishas - business class and plain bhur bhuv svaha by shudras and women folk only. Hey Farah don't look at me like that i am not a m.c.p. (male chauvinistic pig). I am just quoting the author and even Aradhanaji will vouch for me being pro woman. The mantra is Aum Bhoor bhoosv.... Aum Tatsavitur...... prachodayat Aum... Again start from Aum Bhoor bhoosva etc., etc., To achieve the ultimate success one has to do nyaas etc., and complete 24 lakhs of chanting and only then one can have siddhi of the mantra. For the commoners like us one mala of 108 would be ideal, anything less i am not in favour at all. Anything more fine but minimum chanting should be 108 only. Some do 9 18 27 54 etc., which is okay for an 8 year old kid but rest should try to cover 108 beads chanting. By the way in olden times gayathri mantra was chanted by both males and females without any restriction. In fact the thread ceremony was performed of both males and females unlike now wherein it is only done for the males only. Few years back i read in times of india an article wherein it was stated that Lord Hanumanji while searching for Sita hit upon the idea of scanning the sea coast of Lanka because he felt the sun was setting and his Sitamayaa would be performing Sandhyavandana at sea shore. So in the end Aumji what you have said is right the mantra which is in existence now is the pirated version of the original but still very very powerful. I wonder what may be the power in the original version of gayathri. With best wishes, Sudhakar HARI OM TAT SAT! Cheers! ) > Dear Farah .. i have never heard a Gayatri mantra without bhur buva
