Hello Anusuyaji.

Namaste!

The word yoga is derived from the root sanskrit word Yoke. Yoke

means to join, as you yoke a bull to a plough. In short joining.

Joining of what? Joining of our ordinary soul with the divine soul.

Aatma ka parmatma se milna ya judna isse yog kahte hain. Ofcourse

there are many more meaning to yoga such as yog karmse kaushalam

etc., etc., It is suffice to say joining or yoking of our soul

with the divine.

Meditation too has many meaning. Learned people say it is

cessation of thoughts. Some say stilling of the mind. Some saints

have said, meditation means to be in tune with infinite. But true

meditation is a rehearsal to die. That is what Saint Paul meant

when he said, I DIE DAILY. It is unfortunate many do not know the

meaning and many have never come across this sentence in Bible.

So how do you die or rehearse to die in meditation. When you are

initiated by a living master (this is a must). You cannot say I

believe in some past master and do meditation according to the

book he or she has written.

Initiation is the touch of the soul from the master to the disciple

wherein the master places his astral form at the third eye of the

disciple. Only when such an initiation has taken place can the

disciple meditate and experience the art of dying while living

JEETHE JI MARNA. In short as it is mentioned in a greek temple.

IF YOU DIE BEFORE YOU DIE WHEN YOU DIE YOU DON'T DIE.

I hope this clarifies your doubt.

With warm regards

SUDHAKAR

HARI OM TAT SAT! Cheers! :o)

Namaste Anusuya ji.I just came here. There are yogis here who can

answer your question very well.I no nothing about yog.Yogic path is

eight fold and meditation is a part of this.Maybe by " yoga " you are

talking about pranayams and kriyas and not dhyana and samadhi etc.

But the yogis begin with this pranayam etc and step by step reach the

latter stages where they try to search for the truth. This is a path

of gyaan ie knowledge. The yogis or gyaanis dont take anything without

testing and understanding. People are on various different paths such

as dhyaan yog, bhakti etc as per thier nature n disposition and God's

desire and direction.

Dear sister Ansuya

Yes it does seem quiet at the moment on our site, where is everyone?

I have been out at yoga all day!

To answer your question, yoga is a way of life which includes many of

the things we discuss here on this site. Meditation is just one part

of that lifestyle. Just to add to what Sudhakar & Aradhana have

said, 'yoga' means to yoke, join or unify (ie to unify the individual

consciousness with the universal consciousness.) There are 4 paths of

yoga - Karma, Jnana, Bhakti & Raja - all discussed on this site

regularly.

In Raja yoga there are 8 steps & meditation is just one of these

steps. The 8 steps are - Yamas (abstensions), Niyamas (observances),

Asanas (steady postures), Pranayama (controlling energy through the

breath), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), Dharana

(concentration of the mind), Dhyana (meditation) & Samadhi (the super

conscious state.)

Im sure the wise Mr Aum will have something to say about this....

So what was the 'hot argument' about? Do share....

With love

Farah

In very simple words.... YOGA is the union of individual soul with

the universal soul (god).....and meditation is the way to achieve it.

Normally people take Yoga as Hathh yoga...but Hathh yoga (Asan

Pranayama etc) are just a part of yoga, which has a deep meaning

Swamiji, thats the astrological Yoga, different from Patanjalis Yoga.

Astrological Yogas are combinations of stars/planets that give certain

results, eg a Raj Yoga gives wealth & power, Gaja Kesari Yoga gives

good fortune etc.

They use the word Yoga, but in a completely different context.

Yes .... actually the meaning of Yoga is sum or combination too. So in

Astrology Yoga means the combination or sum of certain planets or

certain Nakshtras. Astrological yoga is altogether difference from

spiritual Yoga which means union with god
