Shakumbhari Devi is one of the famous shaktipeeths.Sati's head feel

down here. She is also called SHITAKSHI DEVI and SHITLA MAATA

There was a guru named Durgam. He obtained as a benediction from Lord

Brahma the four vedas and that no deva would ever defeat him.Later he

created a lot of disturbance on earth. He defeated Indra, the king of

heaven in war. There was no rain as a result upon the earth for hundred

years.None of the creatures got water.Because of absence of vedas the

brahmins gave up thier religion and the karma on earth kept dwindling.

Seeing this the devas went to Mahadevi and said: " just as you have

killed Shumbha Nishumbha, in the same way kill wicked Durgam too " .

seeing the grief of children Maata filled her her eyes with tears of

love, compassion and mercy. She looked with a hundred eyes the devas and

the sages. With the water of her tears started flowing thousands of

streams. So agan the trees and herbs became green. The rivers, lakes and

ocean were again filled wih water. The grief of the devas was dissipated.

Because of looking with compassion through hundred eyes her name came

to be Shatakshi(hundred eyed). When there was no rain on the earth at

this time SHATAKSHI maata helped the earth by providing vegetables etc

that emanated from her body. And so she came to be known as SHAKUMBHARI

devi.

devi maa fought a fierce battle with Durgam to get back the four vedas

from him. She killed Durgam. And so she is called Maata DURGA.
