THE GOPIS OBSERVED VRATA AND WORSHIPPED DURGA MAA FOR TO HAVE KRISHNA

AS THIER HUSBAND.During the first month of winter the unmarried gopis

observed a vow to worship Maa Katyayini and during this time they ate

only unspiced khichri.At sunrise, the gopis would arrive at the banks

of Yamuna.After bathing they would prepare a clay diety of Maa Durga

and then worship her with aromatic substances like sandalwood paste,

lamps, fruit, betel nuts, newly grown leaves, flower garlands and

incense.

They would pray- " O Katyayini devi, O Shakti, O possessor of mystic

powers and controller of all please make the son of Nanda maharaja my

husband.I offer my obesiances to you "

For the full one month they carried out thier vows and while doing so

they absorbed thier minds in thoughts of Krishna- " may the son of

Nanda Maharaja become my husband "

 

At the purnima/full moon night which marked the end of thier

vrata /vow Krishna stole thier clothes when they were taking bath in

the river.It is at this time that he assured them that he would soon

fulfill the desire of gopis and later h did the rasa leela to fulfill

thier wishes

 

So Maa Durgas worship gave the gopis that which no one else got .So

worship her

Dhanurmaasam is the month during which GODADEVI observed similar vrat . She was

gifted to Kulasekhr ? Alwar while he was tilling land . He brought HER up. She

used to make garland of flowers. The flowers were given to her by her father a

devotee of Lord SRIRANGANAATH.. Every morning the Lord was garlanded by HER

father. One day he observed a long hair entangled in the garland. He asked

GODADEVI if it was hers. To his consternation SHE said everyday SHE put on the

garland in her neck . She said SHE loved the Lord and intended to marry HIM.

The shocked Alwaz did take that " impious garland " to LORD and defaulted.

Lord appeared in the dream and said HE loves GODADEVI`s long tresses and

enjoyed those garlands daily and liked to be adored by those garlands.

GODADEVI composed THIRUPPAVAI and observed the DHANURMAAS vrat. SHE

attained unity with SRIRANGANAATH.
