The Ashwamedha sacrifice was a very esoteric method of Sadhna. The

universe was meditated in the form of a horse.

So the sun was eyes of this horse, air was its breath, the heaven was

its back, the Earth its hooves, rivers its blood vessels etc.

The Brihadarayanak Upanishad describes this sacrifice. Brahman, or

this highest being if the Universe, created the whole Universe as a

horse, & after a year, sacrificed this horse. Since this was created

from his own body(since Brahman is the Universe) he was symbolically

sacrifcing himself to help run the Universe.

This was meant as a inspiration for other Gods, & a guide for humans.

Of course, later on it was taken as literal fact. Brahman conquered

whole Universe by sacrificing himself, but Kings " sacrificed " others.

Like other Vedic( & later Tantric) rituals, it lost its deeper symbolic

meaning, & was reduced to blind rituals, & hence lost.
