The avtaara of Maata Vaishno devi

during Treta yuga(the period when Lord Rama took avtaara) the

rakshasas/demons like Ravana, Kumbhkarana,Khardushna, Tarka etc had

been inflicting too much atrocities at this time all the Shaktis of

Bhagvati gathered and for protecting religion and sadhus they decided

to give birth to a divya Shakti.A devi kanya emerged as a result.She

asked the forms of mahashakti- " Why did you give me birth? "

 

The forms of Mahashakti replied- " We gave you birth for protecting

religion and spreading it.Go to Southern India and take birth as the

daughter of Ratnakar Saagar.There you will take birth from the Amsha of

Lord Vishnu.After that you will do work which will be in favour of

religion. "

 

As the Mahadevi's had desired the divine girl took avtaara in

Ratnakar's home.The girl was christened as TRIKUTA.Later because of

taking birth from Vishnu's amsha she came to be known as VAISHNAVI and

the dharma she spread came to be called VAISHNAVA DHARMA

 

Within a very short period devi TRIKUTA through her divine powers even

attracted the attention of Rishis, munis and devaas. Her fame spread

and people came to see her from far off places.After some time TRIKUTA

MAA took the permission of her father and startred doing tapas at the

samundra tat.She meditated upon Lord Ramachandra and waited for his

arrival.When Lord Rama passed by the place while on his way to Lanka he

saw her in samadhi.TRIKUTA then told Lord Rama that she wanted to have

him as her husband.

Lord Rama said- " In this avtaara I have taken the vow of having one wife

only.But you must get the fruit of your tapa so one day I will come to

you in a disguise.If you are able to recognise me I will accept you. "

 

When Lord Rama was returning to Ayodhya from Lanka he went to Trikuta

maata as an old sadhu.But She was not able to recognise him so Lord

Rama assured her that in his Kalki avtaara she will be his wife. " Till

then you should reside in surmay cave upon the TRIKUT PARVAT which has

three peaks (in North India).There the three mahashaktis reside.Do your

tapa there.There you will become immortal.Everywhere your name and fame

will be spread and you will become famous as Vaishno Devi.

 

Maata is still doing leelas and is still residing in the Shrine in

Jammu.
