Before Navratras, Shradh come and energy of the dead souls roam the earth. Also due to rise of Jyesthha Nakshatra, the negative energies of Mother dhumavati fill the earth. Navratras bring in the protecting energies of Mother Durga and by worshipping her during this time we can take the maximum benefit from those energies. Shri Ram also used this time to fight and kill Ravan. The real worship of shakti during Navratras is done when one remains secluded for 8 days, without food just living on milk and chanting mother's name. But in this Kaliyuga this is not possible for servicemen and domestic people. The following may be taken as rough guidelines as how best we can take benefit from the positive energies of Shakti during Navratras. 1- Clean a secluded corner of the house and establish small devi temple there. If you already have a temple in home, clean and rebuild it again, by putting new clothes etc. 2- First day sit before the mother and pray her to give you strength to worship her during Navratras. Keep all available cash in the house before the mother and request her to accept your legitimately earned money as your offering. Then leaving some amounts for donations etc for the last day, take the balance back as Prasad and use it for home use. This ritual removes the Keelakam (lock) placed by Mahadeva on Devi Mantras 3- Lamp of pure ghee should be lit daily before puja and always offer some fresh flowers (preferably red ). Read Devi Kavacham and Argla Srotam first and then read Durga Saptshati with clear audible voice. In the end Read or sing aloud Tantrokta Devi suktam. The Best is to read the whole durga saptshati daily, if not possible twice daily at dawn and dusk… or once during evening. Arrange the reading in such a way that last chapter is left for the 8th day. 4- Strictly no sex, no alcohol, no gambling or any other such activity during navratras, as this may increase negative energies instead of +ve. Some people don't even shave…if possible this can be done. 5- Fasting is very beneficial during navratras. If possible do it all the 7 days if not at least first or last day. Try to avoid Tamsic food during navratras. The best is Milk and fruits. 6- Reading Saptshati aloud is very significant. Durga Saptshati may look like a simple story of Devi fighting with demons, but it has a psychological method behind. Reading aloud the story of war, transforms the Tamo guna into Rajoguna. This rajoguna is further changed into Sat by Shakti. 7- On the 8th day, wear new clothes and with family worship the Devi by reading the last chapter of shaptshati and offering some aarti etc. make some sweet dish and offer the food to virgin girls (preferably around 7-8 years old). Touch the feet of young girls as mother and offer them gifts, as your pocket allows. 8- If you have some time chant at least five Malas of Aum Dum Durgaye Namah. Keep a small pot full of water before you and sprinkle the water around in the house and on family members, requesting Mother to protect the household. So this is some general idea about worship during navratras. Any shakti mantra chanted during this time has many fold effect. But if you wish to use Navratras for specific purpose like removal of poverty, or disease etc. there are very powerful mantras given at the end of Saptshati. But for this you have to follow full rituals of Nyaas, hawan etc for which local priest can be consulted. If you wish Kali Sadhna it should be done at 12 midnight by chanting Kali beeja mantra.
