Hello everyone , I recently went to Khajuraho temples. I cant believe

why anyone would build temples with so much pornography. I agree with

Gandhiji these temples are blight on Hinduism, & should be pulled

down. Do others agree?

It is always the history or the reason behind it that is important,

When this is not understood, such misunderstandings occur.

These temples were build by the Son of the Moon Deity. Who once due to

Uncontrolled lust, Ravished A beautiful daughter, who was a daughter

of A Sacred Priest.

After this the daughter was very angry and was about to curse Moon

Deity, and at this time, the mood deity promised that no need to

worry, as she would get a son, form this intercourse, and The son

would be very bright and be a great ruler, And it happened as he told,

and This son also made a yagna where the sins of his mother was washed.

Hence mother asked her son to Build these temples, Depicting the Lust

and the sexual time that was spend by her with The moon Deity, who is

the father of the King.

Because initially thought this intercourse was thought as illegal, and

sinful, later it turned to be profitable to her.. so ..

I donno ... if this is a valuable history to be preserved, if you all

feel it is not, than that may be brought down..

Because even i feel that this history is not profound enough, and

neither it has great values to be followed.

But who knows there may be some other mystery hidden, and while

bringing it down, we may bring destroy that secret too.

So what ? Sex was never a taboo in Hinduism. Gandhi himself was

sexually starved man. Remember? when his father died he made love with his wife

Im afraid I must disagree.

The story posted about Moon having lust is obviously made up(as

Khajuraho doesnt show Gods having sex). Its a shame Hindus dont know

about their own culture, & have to make false stories when westerns

laugh at us.

1st thing, only about 10-20% of sculptures are in sexual poses- rest

are doing normal things like woman doing housework, men working,

children playing, farmers farming.

These sculptures show normal human life- which includes sex. The

inside of the temple is empty- to show that the Soul is not affected

by all these activities.

Khajuraho temples are not about sex, there about normal human

activities, which happen on the outside world. But inside, the soul is

in sakshi bhaav- seeing but not affected by all this.

Another thing is, none of the Gods are engaged in sex, only normal

human beings are. This also shows normal human activities must be left

behind if we are to reach God.

There are other esoteric meanings of Khajuraho, which I will discuss

later.

Very nice , i never knew these importance, I always thought the story

was the thing existed..

thank you ,

But isn't higher beings suffered by Lust, but does not lust affect them..

I thought Even the deities , have Intoxicants and also are affected by

lust, as we had numerous incidents in history..

Let me know what you feel .

Yes Gandhi said that Khajuraho was a shame on Hinduism and tried to

get it covered with mud. It was only due to interception by

Rabindra Nath Tagore that his scheme was rejected.

Ansuya is right in one thing…sex was never a taboo in Hinduism and

prior to the invasions, hindu society was very free …. More than

Europeans.

Khajuraho temples were made by the greates psychologists that have

appreared on the earth, some 3000 years ago. There were Tantriks;

their whole approach was called Tantra. The very word Tantra means

expanding consciousness. They had made these beautiful temples all

around the country. Muslims invaders destroyed most of these

temples; but since Khajuraho was then in a deep forest; it was not

found and was saved.

The secret is, tantra believes unless you have gone through all

sexual experiences to the point when sex does not matter to you at …

that is transcendence of your energy. Tantra thus does not stress

upon a forcible discipline of sex ( I am talking Vaam Marga of

Tantra).

And when one has transcended that point where sex becomes

meaningless, one is capable of entering into the inner sanctum of

the temple. You are ready for nothingness of Buddha; you are ready

for pure silence.

So then the sadhakas used to meditate for months on those statues.

And it was a great strategy, because looking at all those statues, a

moment comes ….something in your unconscious disappears. Not just

looking-once was months or years of training. But the sadhakas were

not allowed inside the temple until they became uninterested in

these sexual postures. When their guru saw that somebody had become

completely ininterested – even sitting before the most beautiful

woman he was sitting with closed eyes-then he was allowed to enter

into the temple.

This is the beauty of Hinduism, that it does not fix any rule or

dogma for its followers… any one with any mindset can chose one of

various paths and get enlightenment….Bhakti Karma, gyan, yoga,

Tantra… these paths were specially made for different mind-sets.

The energy is the same.

When the attention is focussed on the body, then food, sex and pleasure

become important. When the attention is focussed on the mind, then

intellectual pursuits like discovery, invention, music and expression become

important. When the attention is predominantly focussed on the awareness

within, then silence and expansion occur.

I have visited the temples there and as Babaji says, they seem to have a

purpose. Even now no one has talked about the huge shiva linga inside one

of the shrines. People tend to focus on the small series of figurines

outside the temple.

" Till one enters the temple of the Heart, pleasures of the flesh seem

unavoidable "

" After one enters the temple of the Heart, pleasures of the flesh seem like

a play "

Welcome back Balaji. Many people were wondering where you vanished.

You were gone a long time, we had many good discusions behind you.

That was the plan of the Masters who built the temple- people would be

so busy looking at outside, they would never see the secrets hidden

inside.

Which is how people behave in the world too- they see the outside,

never seeing the hidden secret of the spirit.

Now there is no doubt that Khajuraho temples are great pride of our

religion, and have to be preserved and people need to be educated

thoroughly..

Dear brother

These beautiful pieces of art are part of your rich history & should

not be compared to something as cheap & shallow as 'pornography.' Im

just glad the muslims didn't manage to rip this temple to pieces when

they had the chance. Be glad that you have had the opportunity to see

such a wonderful temple in person & be proud of the beauty that is in

your history. I would love to go - you are very lucky.

With love

PS - Bala, very nice to see your name back on here again. No worries,

just post when you can. Sending you good wishes. Farah.

If sex is vulgar , please ask yourself.. How many times did you fantasise having

it with how many people in how many ways? Honestly my mind is very corrupt.

A joke is attributed to George Brnard Shaw. At a dinner party hosted by Her

Majesty Shaw asked loud " ladies and gentlemen , what is in between my thighs?

Everyone frowned.

Shaw was sitting in such a way that the leg of the table was in between his

thighs.

So he told everyone that it was the leg of the table.

After sometime Shaw loudly questioned again " ladies and gentlemen ,what is in

between my thighs? "

" Leg of the table " shouted everyone

" No " said Shaw

" It`s what you thought the first time "

Our thoughts are vulgar. Not sex.

Before modern times men and women were moving naked without being called

vulgar.

Kinnera - etymology --- Kin Nera - which woman?

Kim purusha ---- which man?

Tribals did not know which woman was their mother or father.

Sex WAS AMORAL.

Thanks for reading.

yes swami, sex is not vulgur, vulgarity is vulgar. In old times sex

was not taken as a bad thing. women were free to chose husbands even

pandavas were accepted by society, although they were sons of

different gods.

BALA: Welcome back, I was also missing your good messages

Deito: You are great soul, you have guts to accept your faults. Thanks

today your respect increased in my eyes.

Dear brother

Ha ha - not like you to split hairs! I was simply referring to this

beautiful temple being part of the history of HINDUISM - but as you

wish... it is part of the history of OUR human race... & who knows, in

a previous life I may have helped build it! Now that would be

wonderful! :-)

Dear seekaers ,

namaskar .

Please read the following article about the Kajuraho temples

The Facts of Khajuraho --> January 10, 2007

Many times we find that people often quote the Khajuraho Temples as an excuse to

equate hinduism and Hindu Deities with nudity and sex. What is actually

Khajuraho, what does it contain and how many of the quoters have actually

visited the Temples ? Here are the facts.

Lady Applying Make-up

Male and female Statues

Chandela War March

Chandela Musicians

Finally Erotic Sculpture Depicting the Kamasutra Positions.

(Less than 10% of the total carvings)

Lord Matangeshvara Temple, All Temple Deities are Depicted in their Shastriya

Forms

The name Khajuraho may be derived from khajura (date palm), which grows freely

in the area and perhaps because there were two golden khajura trees on a carved

gate here. The old name was Kharjuravahaka (scorpion bearer), the scorpion

symbolizing poisonous lust. The temples were built under the late Chandela kings

between 950 and 1050 AD in a truly inspired burst of creativity. With the fading

of Chandela fortunes, the importance of Khajuraho waned but temple building

continued until the 12th century at a much reduced pace. The Chandelas were

followers of the Tantric cult which believes that gratification of earthly

desires is a step towards attaining the ultimate liberation. Tantrism has been

mostly misunderstood and the Philosophical part of Tantras like the Mahanirvana

Tantra have been totally forgotten. This was one of the reasons why Tantrics

perished. Nevertheless it remains a distinct path of Spiritual Practice though

it has very few followers all over the world.

1. It must be emphasized that Khajuraho Temples, do not contain sexual themes

inside the Temple premises or near the deity but only on external carvings. They

portray that for seeing the deity, one must leave his sexual desires outside the

Temple. They also depict that the inner deity of the Temple is pure like the

soul (atman) which is unaffected by sexual desires and other gross tendencies,

destiny etc, whereas the external curvature and carvings of the Temples depict

the bodily changes that occur in us.

2. Only as many as 10% carvings contain sexual themes, not between any deities

but between ordinary humans. The rest depict the common man's life of those

days. For example ladies applying makeup, musicians, potters, Farmers etc. All

these are away from Temple deities. They give the message that one should always

have God as the central point in one's life even though one is engaged in

worldly activities.

3. It is a misconception that since Khajuraho are Temples, they depict sex

between deities!

4. In Khajuraho Temples, the idols of Shiva, Nandi, Goddess Durga,

Incarnations of Vishnu etc are fully clothed.

5. All over India, in no Temples have idols of Deities been shown nude and in

sexual positions !

6. Types of beauty in the Hindu religion – Union of man and woman

'The basic Universal Divine Energy (Shakti) is a symbol of the union of man

and woman and it is the main spiritual emotion in Hindu art depicted in the

man-woman sculptures seen in Amravati, Khajuraho, Konark, etc. Here Divine Energy

(Shakti) manifests in the man-woman union, the basis of Vedic art and culture.

Sculptures in the Ajanta caves are also a depiction of the man and woman, but

sexual congress is prohibited in the sculptures’. Bharatiya Sanskruti Kosh,

pages 166-169
