Viacom’s Nick buys TV rights for Little Krishna

PUNE: Viacom Media’s kids’ entertainment channel Nick has bought the television broadcast rights for the animation series Little Krishna, produced

by Iskon’s India

Heritage Foundation (IHF) and Reliance ADAG’s Big Animation. This is the first time the channel has acquired any Indian animation content.

Made at a cost of Rs 50 crore, the 13-episode Little Krishna is the first product of Big Animation, formerly known as Anirights Infomedia, before its acquisition by Reliance ADAG two years ago. Following its revamp, Nick has been on the lookout for two years for Indian content, but could not find the right one, the channel’s India general manager Nina Elavia Jaipuria said.

“We looked at many Indian animation products over these two years, but none of them matched the quality we wanted. The producers asked for a price which was not commensurate with that quality. Hanuman was the best of the lot, but Disney had already acquired it. Little Krishna was the best product we saw, which is why we have acquired its rights for two years,” she said.

While Nick has acquired the rights for two years for the South Asia territory, Big Animation is looking to sell rights for the series in other territories, its CEO Ashish SK said. “Krishna is known in many countries, and we are in discussion with some distributors. We plan to sell the rights to broadcasters in Europe, North America, Latin America, Europe, Far East etc, next year,” he said. Big Animation roped in Emmy Award winner Jeffrey Scott to script the Little Krishna series. The company is also working on a full length movie on Krishna. The Rs 26-crore film will be ready in the next two months.
