Hi Matthew

yes, candida promotes leaky gut by growing into the walls of the

intestine, causing them to be permeable

but the underlying cause is improper foods in the improper

combinations at the improper times

this weakens digestion/agni, causing ama/toxins to accumulate

it is interesting to draw the link between ama, which essentially is

"dead" energy that displaces the "vital" energy of the body, and a

fungus (i.e. candida), which essentially survives on this "dead" energy

as a result, if we correct digestion and remove the ama, the candida

cannot survive and the problem is solved

it is also important to note however that digestion/agni plays a very

important role in enhancing immune function, and when vitality/ojas

is weak, it cannot supply the energy to digestion/agni

thus in diseases like AIDS and cancer in which ojas is diminished we

have to enhance ojas simultaneous to enhancing digestion and

dispelling ama - however, it is always better to rid the body

completely of ama before building ojas, but in severe chronic disease

we don't have this luxury, and so we use both, cleansing and building

in a gentle, alternating fashion

as far as whether or not you have candida i am not sure - this is

what you were told by a nurse?

certainly some of your symptoms suggest a pitta imbalance, as dr

venugopal suggested, but i can't be sure without more information

in the meantime you can fill out a candida questionnaire here: http://

www.wrc.net/wrcnet_content/questionsheets/candidalong.htm

and if you appear to have candida, it is probably useful to look at

liver detoxification (as the seat of pitta), and emphasize bitter,

cooling herbs and foods, excessive sun exposure and anything else

"heating" to the body
