Namah Shivaya dear Listers.

Perhaps you have already read all about Shivarartri at the Ashram through

the newsletter or web site.

On a more personal note, we participated in the healing puja on Friday

morning. We chanted the Healing mantra for an hour. Meanwhile, Amma had come

to the temple as usual on Friday morning and was answering questions. We got

so into the chanting that She sent a messanger to tell us to keep it down,

it was interfering with the questions and answers.

I later heard that Amma answered a question about why there were chained

elephants at the ashram.

She said because they were donated and they had the best life they could

have by being there. If they were returned to the wild, the other elephants

would kill them. She also talked about the monkey that was around for while..

The bridge was dedicated on a day dedicated to Hanuman, the famouns bridge

building monkey.

It was then that this monkey appeared.

As usual we had bhajans with Amma in the evening, had our dinner and went

to bed, not knowing what would be happening. Just as i was dropping off, I

heard to hear Swami singing from the auditorium. Soon, i heard Amma

singing. For the rest of the night i was wide awake listening to what was

going on and getting more and more energized. Amma got really wild before

she ended. It reminded me of how they say she used to be. Then the singing

moved to the temple, where some of the younger ones did stay up all night. I

listened to them too. And the cuckoos and cows were going off in the middle

of the night. And there was chanting from a temple across the backwater.

When we went for morning prayers before 5, the place was just starting to

settle down. The temple was full of energy. Kali seemed to be dancing on top

of Shiva. Closest US gets to this is New Year's Eve. Or maybe Mardi Gras?

I was feeling a little sad that i had missed actually attending this rare

event. But reading Amma's satsang made me feel a little better. By Her

grace, She did keep this child awake:

"To prevent the snake-bite victim from falling asleep, his friends and

family will sing and dance and pour water over his head," Amma said.

"They will also make him drink bitter medicines. Onlookers may feel

sorry for the patient. They might even say, 'Poor guy! Just let him

close his eyes for a while! Why are you troubling him like this?' But

the doctor knows that if he is allowed to fall asleep that he may

die."

Amma said that the Guru is like this doctor. He will do anything and

everything to keep us awake. We may not like it. He will make you

drink bitter medicines in the form of experiences. But all this is

done with the our higher good in mind—to awake us and keep us awake.

Amma said that this is why people consider the guru their enemy.

"Unfortunately, many prefer to remain in darkness," Amma said. "If God

were to come before them and offer them liberation now itself, they

would say, 'Now, we want to watch TV. Will you please come later?'
