Dear friends,

 

what is known of the etymology of _gho.ta(ka)_ 'horse'?

It seems to have no Indo-European etymology. I note

that Whitney calls _ghu.t_ 'no proper root'. Also how

early is _gho.ta(ka)_ attested?
