Guest guest
Congress Party Statement at end of article ignores the fact that Indians generally speak better english than the rest of the world. Also would not such a glorification of English be better placed at an English school. Sometimes I wonder if these antics are done as a kind of litmus test regarding the Indian public mood. Now Congress will probably be Sanskrtizing itself when campaigning in UP. And whoever said everyone in the world wants "to join politics or maybe go abroad and earn a handsome salary' as the Gov stated. V BJP takes on UP Governor Sunday, February 11, 2007 03:22:09 am “To say that Sanskrit has no future only displays the lack of information,” said Senior BJP Leader Murli Manohar Joshi As a reaction to his statements made in a speech to graduate students, the BJP lashed out at UP Governor T V Rajeswar, saying that his remarks were incorrect. "The entire Chandrashastra and the Vedic metres are based on the binary system. So to say that Sanskrit has no future is incorrect and only displays the lack of information on the part of the honourable Governor," said Senior BJP Leader Murli Manohar Joshi. T V Rajeshwar Rao is seen to be close to the Congress. And with the UP elections round the corner, it was also a ready platform to defend the RSS philosophy for the BJP - political arm of the RSS. Sparks of controversy Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi erupted in anger after a speech by the UP Governor, who offered some well-meaning advice to graduate students. The students were upset over his remarks. T V Rajeswar’s comments sparked protests across Varanasi and Allahabad the next day as well "You are free to become pandits or teachers. But if you want to get ahead in life, or intend to join politics or maybe go abroad and earn a handsome salary, then it can't be done in this," the Governor said, on February 6. Of course, the Governor couldn't have picked a more sensitive platform to encourage students to shun Sanskrit - the Hindi heartland. The Governor needed a police escort to escape from the campus. Protests raged across Varanasi and Allahabad the next day as well. "I don't think the Governor intended to belittle or downplay something as ancient and sacred as our language - Sanskrit. What he was really doing is to emphasise the importance of English in the contemporary world," said Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Congress Spokesperson.
