John Introduction

Hello Group,

My name is John and I am new to Hindu philosophy and to Shaivism.

I am attending a University and taking a class on world religions.

In the chapter on Hinduism I was very glad to find beliefs in common

with ones I have had my whole life. This has been a very

transformational episode in my life. I believe that God is a part of

everything and everyone, that all life is sacred and I have some

experience in meditation.

What I joined this group for was to learn how I can practice

Shaivism in my home. I would like to set up a home altar and I have

ordered a natraj from an online shop. What other items would I need

for an altar? I feel drawn to Shiva as the destroyer of ignorance

leading to wisdom. Are other gods displayed on a Shaivist altar? I

also feel drawn to Ganesh and Durga, but I believe my main

connection is with Lord Shiva.

Thank you for your kind patience with me as a beginner. I feel like

a sponge ready to soak up everything I can about this expression of

my spiritual life.

Namaste, John.

John,

there is nothing called Shhaivism or HInduism as there is only One religion

called "sanathana Dharma"-meaning a universal Dharma or concept or religion

or what you have:

1.As per this philosophy none is inferior or superior(Humans

particularly)and there is only One Thing which is binding the entire

Universe called "Brahman" or what you may call as "John" or Atma or Soul as

long as this One thing is even beyond Big Bong -existed/existing and will

continue to exist

2.This supreme Witness is the One&Only Truth which has to be worshipped

3.As long as this is realised-we,a John or Rajah Iyer becomes secondary as

the One thing which binds both of us-even after we are dead-is this Atma

which is eternal

It is not necessary you shd practise in a seperate room a special ritual to

experience Shaivism as long as you sincerely meditate to realise this

ultimate Truth-even in your drawing hall

I suggest you seek a real Guru or Gyani who will guide you to that process

of Realising this ultimate TRuth as all cannot(incl me) guide you for this

realisation as easily as a learned Yogi!

with due respects to every one in this group

s.rajah iyer

Yes sir, absolutely true, I too retire the gayatri mantra 11 times and

generally do namaskar to all gods, but devote myself to lord Shiva

only.........reading the Shatarudriya,

Dear Tiaagrajan,

OM NAMAH SHIVAYA,

YES IN KALIYUGA,

LIFE OF MODERN MAN IS VERY SHORT,

MAN HAS TO EARN, SO THAT HE CAN LEARN TO UNITE WITH GOD.

HE HAS TO ACHIEVE ALMOST EVERYTHING WITHIN A SHORT SPAN OF LIFE,

YOUR QUESTION IS ,HOW IS IT POSSIBLE ?

A DEVOTEE SHOULD BE LESS RITUALISTIC AND BE MORE SPIRITUALISTIC

IN APPROACH TO GOD.

BHAKTI, PURE DEVOTION, BECOZ BAKTI CROSSES ALL DO'S AND DONT'S

GOD IS PLEASED WITH A DEVOTEE,

EVEN IF HE OFFERS A SINGLE PETAL, A LEAF TO GOD OUT OF

PURE DEVOTION.

IN BHAKTI WHAT YOU DO AND OFFER TO GOD OUT OF LOVE,THAT ITSELF

BECOMES A RITUAL.

TRY YOURSELF AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS !!!

JUST OFFER PURE WATER ON SHIVALINGA EVERY MORNING,

PLACE A SINGLE FLOWER, A BHEL PATRA

CHANT OM-NAMAH-SHIVAYA 5TIMES AND SEE THE DIFFERENCE YOURSELF.

THE MORE AND MORE YOU GET INVOLVED IN RITUALS, THE MORE AND

MORE YOU GET ENTANGLED, THEN THE RITUAL ITSELF BECOMES A BARRIER

TO THE GOAL OF REACHING GOD.

IN HINDUISM THERE IS SO MANY WAYS TO REACH GOD,

BUT ULTIMATELY YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE ONLY ONE ROUTE,THAT SUITS YOUR

LIFESTYLE THE BEST.

WHETHER IT IS LORD SHIVA, MOTHER DURGA, LORD GANESH,LORD VISHNU,...

CHOOSE ONE ISTHA DEVATA, TRY TO REACH HIM ONLY,

REGARDS,

SURESH
