Normally we eat much more food than we need. This is not possible at the present time at Amritapuri and therefore Amma's recommedations to fast one day a week and purge the system every two weeks with herbal purgatives is understandable. Otherwise, the body gets too acidic on a predominatly grains diet with little vegatables. In USA, all kind of GREENS are availabe at the local supermarket or farmers market. How much GREENS? 50% and above is good daily. Even 100% GREENS for a short period is excellent. Of course, you need to experiment a little and see what agrees with you? Raw GREENS, steamed, boiled soups, juiced, blended? There are even GREEN Powders( wheat grass, barley grass, alfalfa, spirulina, etc ). Also, coming back to juicing: In my case, in the past, fresh FRUIT juices were very helpful for purging the system after over indulging in grain products( including both the "unhealthy" processed and the so called "healthy whole grains" ); which for my body system is too mucousy and congesting. But overall freshly made VEGGIE juices are better for me; carrot with a bit of celery and ginger is one of my favorites. Veggies and fruits can be cooling to the system for some and a little( or a lot of ginger ) helps keep warm during winter. May Amma help us to keep it simple and eventually to transcend the complexities of diets and other world stuff.
