Let the discussion whether a certain disease of modern medicine

is "what Vata" interest academicians. Ancient acharyas (e.g.

Vaghbhat) permit treatment even if a disease has a name or not,

whether sufficient patients having similar conditions and responding

to similar class of medicines exist or not. All that Vaidya has to

observe is, he has understood what is happening in the body (and

mind of course) of the patient and he has confidence that he can

treat the patinet to success. (word cure is not used here as it may

lead to a debate). Ayurveda provides its own methods of assessments

for the patients health(disease) and it does not have to borrow ANY

method of modern medicine, not even thermometer. OF course Vaidya

must be healthy and fit for his duties.

The debate on what condition of modern medicine relates to what

disease in ayurveda was never a concern for Vaidyas, since modern

medicine defined at least 10,000 diseases after 10,000 researchers

and doctors. Vaidya can manage his duties well with not more than

200 herbs and his senses as diagnostic tools.

On the other hand, the so called "evidence based medicine" has

become a modern day quackery, a bold statement made at:

http://www.newstarget.com/021526.html

Some patients of this author had a nightmarish experience when they

wanted to verify success of diabetes treatment by lab reports. More

about it in some other post.

Returning to the discussion on RA, Aamvata, author notes that some

of the symptoms of joint stiffness, pain, swelling etc are seen in

less than 30 years aged youngsters, an area of concern! Pains in

fingers, elbows, shoulders, neck, swellings near the joints, fatty

deposits, all are becoming familiar symptoms. repeating from patient

to patient. Perhaps due to auto-immunity, but let reason not worry

us right now.

Author will describe two patients. a girl aged 15, having knee joint

pain, pain and swelling in fingers. Even writing a little in high school started pains. slight warm touch at these

joints. Pulse showed vitiation of Vata and pitta. Pitta is the

predominant pulse in youth, but Vata is not common.

Similar to the discussion provided by author treated her by a

drugless approach, a restricted foods and detoxification treatment

of 8 days, repeated once more after a gap of two weeks, and

breathing exercise similar to Kapalbhatti and anulom-vilom of

Patanjali yoga. She was entirely free of pains and swellings in two treatment cycles. And cure is long lived. Today more than a year after, the girl is free of

the pains, swellings etc and all health indicators are fine. Not a

single drug is used thereafter. The advantage of ths treatment cycle is patient is tempted to a restricted diet menu since it only for a temporary period. But after the benifit he need not be told to stick to the diet. The parting gift from the Vaidya is few more items the patient can treat his tongue, may be once in a fortnight to keep mental craving at bay!

Second case is 28 years aged boy studying for MBA degree. Lean,

thin, weighing hardly 50 Kg, about 5 feet tall. Nice looking, curly hair, but skinny appearance. Stiff back, could

not sit in class lectures due to the pain. Pain killers had stopped working and

steroidal drugs were about to be prescribed by alllopaths. since a

Mumbai relative of his was author's patient, he came over. Pulse

indicated dominant vata vitiation, a little pitta too. No swellings,

only stiffness. Pain only if he would get up quickly and tried to

stand erect. The youth was fond of eating chicken but no other vice.

Three 8 day long drugless "restricted

food+detoxification treatments along with breathing exercises" with

a gap of two weeks in between each relieved his backpain fully and today

he is doing all yogasanas which involving bending spine in full 180

degree angle. Significant relief obtained at the end of very first cycle brings in patient loyalty and patient completes the programme. The back pain exercises of Shri Acharyaji he could not

do due to intense pain and rather opted for ayurvedic treatment.

Some of the variables in this treatments to suit each individuals

imbalance of doshas is the food choice and detoxification dose and

panchkarma oil for basti. But even this was cold pressed edible oil

only, not medicated oil for these two patients. Hence entire

approach is drugless.

The restricted food+detoxification program involves panchkarma for

two days, just 1 hour each day.

A friend, seeing the success of the method, on several other patients [suffering from "Aamvata" or "RA" diagnosis according to both ayurveda and modern medicine], has provided an

inexpensive accomodation and food suitable for this program for out-

station patients.

The treatment is a variation of 28 day long "ginger water and moong bean" fasting treatment taught to this author by a Jain monk, and desrcibed 2 years earlier in the archives. While this treatment nobody could undertake, author devised a simpler shorter version with a pause in between so that it became more acceptable to Mumbai's milling crowd.

Conclusion is that the drugless approach is gaining more popularity.

Thanks to the messiah Ramdev.
