up to and including ashoka there were constant wars and upheaval in

india, and after the battle of kalinga ashoka underwent a profound

change and instituted one of the most remarkable social policies the

world has ever seen

by any measure, the post-ashoka period in India up to the age of

invasion represents one of the greatest periods of indian history,

one that is verifiable and on the historical record, one that all

indians can and should be proud of - your nation's symbols are based

on it!!

the primary problem with your theory is that varna is not based on

birth, but on an individual's qualities

thus a humble dalit like ammachi becomes a brahmin (maybe you would

deny her this title)

you continually confuse varna with caste

here is a thorough refutation of your favorite premise: http://

in the past when you felt the need to raise such issues on this list

i brought up the life of jivaka komarabaccha, the fatherless son of a

prostitute that went on to become one of the greatest physicians in

ayurveda

you never responded directly to this critique and apparently have no

model to explain this, and therein lies the extreme danger of your

statements, because you unequivocally advocate that we shape an

entire society based on a very narrow interpretation of a speculative

philosophy, one of that i feel is rife with gender, social and racial

discrimination that disallows the basic human right of self-

determination

i object to it vociferously and state that it has no place on this

list, and it has nothing to do with ayurveda and the practice of healing

first off, the buddha didn't "preach" in any conventional sense

because he had no way to compel anyone to listen to him other than

the merits of his arguments, based on his personal experiences -

there was no fear of some heavenly retribution if people didn't

listen to him, only the misery of their personal suffering

he simply pointed out an existential problem and the path that leads

from it

and being chaste was a facet of this teaching

within his lifetime the path outlined by buddha became enshrined in

the rules for monks and nuns outlined in the vinaya pitaka

this at least 300 years before ashoka was born

and while ashoka supported buddhist monasteries and other faiths, he

himself was not chaste and nor did he compel others to become buddhist

he was by any measure an "enlightened" ruler that validated and

practiced the ideals of religious tolerance

as far as ayurveda is concerned, ashoka is known as a patron of the

healing arts, establishing medical schools and planting medicinal

herb gardens for the benefit of all, as seen in his famous rock edicts

yes ashoka was a human, and a human king at that - no doubt pompous,

arrogant and self-righteous as kings usually are

but there is no other king is in indian history that can be proved as

an actual historical figure and not just that of myth and legend,

that compares as favorably as ashoka

where is there any evidence of this claim? you can't simply state

this as fact without evidence

more speculation, all to fit your theory

sometimes humor is the only viable response to fundamentalist beliefs

- logical debate is usually unsuccessful, even if we use potty talk

i encourage you to rise up among us, the light of pure knowledge

scintillating from your enlightened mind, shaping consciousness-

energy-matter so that what you say becomes self-evident to all

until then, talk is cheap my friend
