Nivritti and Pravritti are 2 paths laid down in Gita. Nivritti is sanyasa yoga and pravritti is karma yoga. Karma yoga is supposed to be for newcomers or fresh entrants in sadhana. Performing actions without pride, without selfish desires, without sense of doership, without regard for outcome, one can purify his mind and buddhi. Nivritti is for advanced sadhaks who don't care much about anything worldly, have acquired sufficient maturity, have neutralized their likes and dislikes and are totally committed to the pursuit of Brahm vidya or knowledge of God/Brahman. regards, Om Namah Sivaya
