This day marks the commencement of the Sun's north ward journey by entering Makara rasi (Capricorn). This path is known as the Uttaraayana path. This journey begins at the point of time when the Sun enters the sign of Makara or Capricorn. Interestingly, this is the only festival in Hindu/Indian calendar that follows a solar calendar. Rest of the Hindu festivals are computed using the lunar calendar). Sankranti is termed as Pongal in Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu, Rangooli and prayers constitute the celebration of the festival. It is believed that the day of Makara Sankranti is so auspiciousicted that a person dying on this auspicious day directly goes to the heaven. Bhishma, was an elder in the epic Mahabharata, is said to have waited for this day to breathe his last. It is also on this day every twelve years the Great _Kumbh-Mela_ (http://www.salagram.net/parishad135km.htm) is held at Prayag. On this day, Ayyappa is worshipped in Sabarimala and many shrines all over India as well as globally.
