Guest guest
Om Nama Shivaya. I am involved in a charity of teaching kids ( below age 12 ) and children ( age 12 - 18 ) in various subjects. I HAVE INSISTED MY TEAM TO INCLUDE " EXPLORING HINDUISM " AS A SUBJECT, and the committee has accepted to add this. Since our Kids and Children are less aware of the main pricipals and beleifs of Hinduism ( like many still beleive in existance of many Gods...etc..) we would like to educate them on the Basics of Hinduism. So i request you all to give your valuable ideas and suggestion like where to start and how to go ahead with this project and what sort of things to be taught to this two different age groups. Also if any of you can suggest me any book (which iam ready to buy) which could guide me for this project ( teach kids on the basics of Hinduism ) it would be a great help for me. Thanks in advance for your great help. Best Regards Senthil. Shivaya nama Aum. Thiruchitrambalam.

I HAVE INSISTED MY TEAM > TO INCLUDE " EXPLORING HINDUISM " AS A SUBJECT, and the committee has ------------------------------ My dear senthil, This is a wonderful idea. In fact i had long been wishing that we hindus should start educating our children about the various aspects of hinduism. The parents themselves do not know much of hinduism so what they will teach is doubtful. so our children are just getting vague information about hinduism. There are no good books on hinduism for children and our education system makes more Communists than hindus. I feel children below 12 must be given education through stories (like Dhruva, Purna bhakta, hanuman, kabir, Eklavya, Abhimanyu, Shivaji, Guru Gobind singhji etc etc). A group should chalk out a programme for elder children, making gita simplified with the most simple knowledge about God, our culture and our philosophy. If someone could write a small book outlining hinduism in a nut shell...and the book is printed and distributed in all Indian language to the children would be a great idea...but money is a problem....more discussion on this may bring some fruitful results. with love Baba
Guest guest
Yes this is a very good idea. We can explain the stories in our Holy books, & the hidden meanings behind them. Another good thing is to explain the symbology used in our scriptures, like why Shivji carries Trishul, what the many hands of Gods/godesses signfy etc. In fact, most adults dont know this either, so the book will be useful to them as well. For slightly older children, simplified versions of the Gita & few main Upanishads would be a good idea. The Kathopnishad, which has both a story as well as a deep message, would be a good example. Guest guest
There is a set of 7 or 8 books titled "Vedic Heritage Teaching Program" for children written by Sunita and Dr. Sundar Ramaswamy and published by Sri Gangadhareshvara Trust, Swami Dayananda Ashram, Rishikesh, India. These books contain stories from scriptures, pictures for coloring, quiz etc. Further information for these books can be had from: dayas1088 (AT) hotmail (DOT) com OM radhakutir - "beirut_ka_baba" <no_reply> <> Friday, January 05, 2007 1:07 PM Re: Need help on teaching Hinduism to Kids and Children. ------------------------------ My dear senthil, If someone could write a small book outlining hinduism in a nut shell...and the book is printed and distributed in all Indian language to the children would be a great idea...but money is a problem....more discussion on this may bring some fruitful results. with love Baba -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Guest guest
Om Nama Shivaya. Thanks Babaji, ShanracerJi & RadhakutirJi. As steps towards my earlier post reg teaching Hinduism to kids and children, we have started approaching the Sri Ramakrishna Math who are running a big Educational institution at Coimbatore and my town Tirupur, for their veiws and help. Also one of my recent friend who is running a Vivekananda Sevalaya ( has a library, and again teaching students yoga and teachings of Swami Ramakrishna, Saratha Devi and Swami vivekananda ) and received quiet a few ideas. But to start with its going to be very tough as the parents of induvidual kids might have taught their kids in their way and beleifs and as a general survey taken by us reveals "Polytheism beleifs". In our discussion, we had doubts how can we say God is Unique to the children, denying or deviating from his/her beleif of misunderstanding an avatar or a diety is the God. So in General the first conclusion what we have come to is, to appoint a person who is author for Kids and Children books who can suggest, to what extend the contents of books has to be for different age groupss, then apporach vedic scholars and dicuss with them on what can be included in the contents of the book for each age group. ( again we will have to face problem on what areas should the content of books should be ( the shaiva literature or vainav literature or Saktham literature or in what proportion it has to be taught ). As Babaji and ShanracerJi pointed out reg stories from our literature to start with and then simplified form of Gita, upanishads, vedas, yes it is a right approach and its exactly what we discussed, but the main thing is how to get the simplified version of these without the influence of the authors misconception, as i have not come accross such books ready available. So as a begining we have decided within August we should finalise on the sylabus ( contents ) - [ 1st grade till 12th grade ].and then in next phase will workout on the cost effectivness and the ways to implement thro schools or public functions or in any other way. I wish to get more posts from you all to motivate us and encourage us and guide us to make our project atleast as a smallest success. N.B : as per Radhakutirs message i will sure contact the publisher for more details. Thanks for your info. Thanks in advance for your great help. Best Regards Senthil. Shivaya nama Aum.
