Guest guest
Dear List I'm not clear theoretically why Saturn returns are so important. Usually sade sati is considered important as bringing change to an individual's life but some take it from the moon and others from the lagna. Saturn transitting the 8th from Lagna is notorious for health problems or death and Saturn transitting 4th from the Moon is said to be a time of mental woes. But I'm a bit ignorant on Saturn returns and can't say that anything significant really happened in my 29th year. Could anyone explain the theory or share their experience. Guest guest
Hello Nicholas, I usually think of you as being a font of astrological knowledge, so I'm somewhat suspicious of your asking about Saturn returns. I feel somewhat sure that if I say anything you'll say, "duh, I knew THAT, I meant..." Then again, if I listened to my inner voice I'd make far fewer mistakes and then what would I lament? At all times remember please that my information is tropical and may not be what you are asking about. My father told me that the first Saturn return was a time when the things promised by Saturn in your chart at birth were 'activated'. Don't ask, he didn't explain that part. He also said that it was likely to be a time when a person would either take on a responsibility or shirk one. This decision would likely direct a person's life after that point. At the time of one's second Saturn return, he said you would then reap the benefits (or the detriments) of the path you chose at the first return. Seems kind of simplistic to me, but that was what I was told. Apparently some people mark the return by when Saturn actually transits its natal position, others just mark it by the approximate year (29/30) that the 'cycle' ends and begins anew (which doesn't always correspond with the actual transit). Apparently, Saturn's first full return cycle coincides with Jupiter's half return cycle (some kind of opposition or setback in dealings with another person) and so the first Saturn return tends to be memorable. Hmm. Anyway, I have only 2 examples. A man had his first Saturn return (by transit) twice, Feb 92 (age 29) and Oct 92 (age 30). Up until Dec 91 he had been a very family-oriented guy making constant promises of emotional and financial support to his parents. The reality was actually that they gave the emotional and financial support to him. In Dec 91 he met a woman and started a relationship. In Feb 92 he broke from his family and declared he would now turn his allegiance to his partner. In Oct 92 he married her. Since then, he has almost never had any contact with his family. His life took a 180 degree turn and a later divorce had no effect on this new path. A woman had her first Saturn return (by transit) twice, Apr 92 (age 28) and Feb 93 (age 29). She had recently achieved a good degree and was poised to start a good career. In Apr 92 one parent was diagnosed with a terminal illness and she opted to postpone her career to care for them. In Feb 93, while caring for the one parent she committed to the other parent to become responsible for achieving something for them that turned out to be almost unachievable. The end result being that her parents became her career and that is a path she's had great difficulty breaking out of. Oddly, that path connected her to people and ideas that are finally jolting her into a different path, but the basic personality of serving and caring for others seems set. I don't have any examples for the second "judgment time" return of Saturn but Richard gave a good example of some parents who chose a path of oppression and are now paying for it. Oh, and to back what you say about Saturn transiting the 8th from Lagna being notorious for health problems or death: my own father died the day his Saturn (ruling his 6th of tropical health) exactly conjuncted his 8th of death. [At the same time, the ruler of his end-of-the-matter 4th conjuncted the cusp of his health 6th and his energy Mars left his health 6th.] Hopefully someone else will add the information of what a Saturn return means in vedic terms. Guest guest
Namaste, Mary. May Lord Ganesh remove all obstacles from your life and grant you peace and prosperity. I see nothing "simplistic" about your father's advice. While this is as good a way of stating the "rule" as any I could come up with, the depth of meaning, IMHO, should not be overlooked. I feel I have made many, highly significant changes in most every area of my life experience across my 67 years. Yet, the times of my Saturn returns marked what I believe to be pivotal points in my personal life. I often refer to Saturn, astrologically, as "God in one's chart". Its ingresses and, often, egresses, as well as its cycles relative to each graha (planet) in my chart invariably point me to a strong lesson. At this stage of my live, I have been "shown" that I need to pay close attention to the "message within the message" or the "lesson within the lesson". It seems that the graha drishtis (planetary aspects) formed by the transiting planets 'trigger' lessons of the aspected houses and planets therein. And the house which Saturn is transiting is more strongly activated (Its hard not to notice when an 800-pound gorilla is sitting on you! I certainly want to "move" and get out from under that!!). Yet, the rasi drishtis (sign aspects) seem to identify where the effects of the energy shifts will be felt. Namaste, David P. O.
